Nintendo halts Switch 2 preorders in the United States to assess tariff impact

Nintendo is halting its planned pre-order process for the Nintendo Switch 2 in response to President Donald Trump’s newly announced tariffs. Interested buyers in the United States will no longer be able to preorder the system starting on April 9 as originally planned, though Nintendo still plans to release the system on June 5.

Nintendo fully unveiled the Nintendo Switch 2 on Wednesday, April 2 with a Direct presentation. At that that time, the company revealed that the system will cost $450, and also get a $500 special edition that includes Mario Kart World. Later that day, President Donald Trump unveiled sweeping tariffs on countries outside of the United States, which raised questions on whether or not the price would stick. In a statement to Digital Trends today, Nintendo has finally addressed tariffs and halted preorders in response.

“Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged,” a statement sent to Digital Trends from Nintendo reads.

The news is sure to stoke fears that the Nintendo Switch 2’s hotly debated price could be rising, not dropping. The issue likely stems from the fact that President Trump announced an unexpected 46% tariff on products imported from Vietnam. That’s where Nintendo has been manufacturing the Switch since 2019, when it moved the process out of China. That was a move also triggered amid President Trump’s first term as he threatened a 25% tariff on China at that time.

For now, there is no word on when preorders will go live, but Nintendo still plans to launch the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5 alongside Mario Kart World.

The Pan European Game Information website, better known as PEGI, just rated Assassin's Creed Shadows for the Nintendo Switch 2 — and that's a pretty solid indication the game could make its way to the console either at or after its June 5 launch. That said, it's also possible that someone simply clicked the wrong checkbox on the backend of the site and that Ubisoft has no intention of porting the game to the Switch 2, so take this with a grain of salt.

PEGI is basically the European version of the ESRB, responsible for suggesting the appropriate target age for a game. If you go to the specific page for Assassin's Creed Shadows, it doesn't list the Nintendo Switch 2, but if you look at the "Most Searched Games" subhead, it shows up there.

Over the years, the Nintendo brand has shifted to meet the times, but through it all, it's at least felt synonymous with one image (or turn of phrase, I guess): E for Everyone. Over the decades, the legendary developer and publisher has always had an ethos that has guided its games and consoles into the hands of gamers regardless of age and background. With the Switch 2, it's beginning to feel that that may not be true anymore.

The Switch 2 was fully unveiled earlier this month, and despite the fervor and excitement surrounding it, there's been a pretty noticeable tension around its various exorbitant prices. The system itself was tentatively priced at $450 and a bundle including Mario Kart World was coming in at $500 before the threat of US tariffs on every conceivable stretch of land -- even those with no human life on them -- forced Nintendo's hand, delaying preorders in the US and Canada. The thinking is that when they do become available, they will have already experienced a price hike, which is wild considering the fact that the newest Mario Kart game alone was being sold at the prohibitive cost of $80.
