Nintendo’s ‘Share The Fun’ sale knocks 50 percent off select Switch games

Nintendo is running a sale on multiplayer Switch games that features discounts on several titles of up to 50% off.

The sale is called “Share the Fun,” and it runs through 11:59 p.m. PT on August 30. Nintendo runs sales occasionally, but this is one of the first specifically catered to multiplayer games on the system.

There are quite a few standout titles featured. Cuphead, a critically acclaimed platformer with a throwback animation and music style, is $16, down from $20. The game features the adventures of protagonist Cuphead and his brother Mugman as they try to repay their debt to the devil. The game was drawn in the 1930s cartoon style of Fleischer Studios and Walt Disney.

Luigi’s Mansion 3, which features Mario’s green overalls-wearing brother as he tries to vacuum ghosts in a haunted mansion, is $42, down from $60. Just Dance 2020, which features pop music and avatars to dance along to, is $20, down from $40.

Fighting game Arms, which features characters with springy arms going head-to-head in battle arenas, is $42, down from $60. Racing game Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, featuring characters from the Crash Bandicoot franchise, is reduced to $24 from $40.

The online multiplayer classic Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, which allows for up to 16 online players in modes like siege, capture the flag, and free-for-all, is priced at $10, down from $20. Dungeon-crawling top-down retro shooter Enter the Gungeon is $7.50 down from $15.

Mother 3 is finally on Nintendo Switch … but only in Japan

Mother 3, the highly requested cult-classic RPG for the Game Boy Advance, is set to appear today on the Nintendo Switch Online service. But there's a catch: It's only available in Japan.

North Americans were first introduced to the Mother series under the name Earthbound on the SNES in 1995. As was common at the time, the game was renamed for the West in an attempt to avoid confusion. In 2006, a third entry was released in Japan for the GBA simply called Mother 3, but it has never had an official translation for Western audiences. Both Mother 2, aka Earthbound, and the original Mother, renamed Earthbound Beginnings, have been added to Nintendo Switch Online, but there has never been any indication that the third game would receive the same treatment.

Grounded and Pentiment are the first Xbox games to come to Nintendo Switch

During Wednesday's Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase, we learned about two of the Xbox Game Studios titles that are going multiplatform. The games in question are Obsidian Entertainment's Grounded and Pentiment, and the latter will launch tomorrow on Nintendo Switch.

Earlier this year, various leaks and rumors suggested that first-party Xbox exclusives like Hi-Fi Rush and Pentiment could make their way over to competing platforms. Microsoft finally addressed the rumors on February 15, confirming that it planned to bring four of its first-party games to non-Xbox platforms over the course of 2024. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer wouldn't say what any of the specific games were at the time, though, stating that "the teams that are building those games have announced plans that are not too far away." It's now clear that Spencer was partially referring to this Nintendo Direct, as two of the games showed up here.
