Oculus Quest 2 headset details have leaked

Details about Facebook’s upcoming Oculus Quest 2 virtual reality headset have leaked. The leak, first spotted by Twitter user Aiman Farooq (via Engadget), consists of a series of videos about the Quest 2, including details of the headset features, the accessories available, and the evolution from the existing Quest to the new model.

The key specs of the headset are that it will use the Snapdragon XR2 chipset, an upgrade from the previous Snapdragon 835 used in the original Quest, and the new mode will use dual “nearly 2K” displays. It also has 2GM more RAM than the previous model, at 6GB of RAM up from 4GB previously. There’s also more storage available with up to 256GB increased from 128GB in the previous model.

The headset should be more comfortable too with an updated strap which makes it easier to put on and take off.

As well as updates to the headset itself, the controllers are getting a refresh too. They have ergonomic updates to make them more comfortable to use, and there’s an option to support hand tracking so some games could allow you to interact without using the controllers at all.

There’s an updated sound system which supports 3D sound. This makes it seem as if sound effects are coming from all around you, which should help pinpoint the origin of sounds while playing.

Some details which aren’t available yet include how much the system will cost. Setting up a VR system at home isn’t cheap, and high costs of hardware are a barrier to entry for many gamers. It remains to be seen how affordable or expensive the new Oculus Quest 2 system will be.

This leak follows another leak in July this year showing the appearance of the headset, but the details of the hardware updates are new.

Oculus was also the subject of some controversy recently as it announced a change in which users would be required to have a Facebook account to use the service. Existing Oculus users can merge their Oculus account with their Facebook account, but from January 2023 all Oculus accounts will be disabled and all users will need to log in with their Facebook account.

VR gaming lost me in 2023, and then totally won me back
A character slashes enemies in Asgard's Wrath 2.

If you'd asked me where I stood on VR gaming back in early May of this year, it would have been a dire conversation.

A little over a month into the PlayStation VR2's life span, I was feeling entirely disillusioned with the tech. Headsets liked the Meta Quest 2 had stopped delivering fresh experiences that felt like they could transcend the technical gimmick and PSVR2 felt dead in the water on day one. Despite being a firm supporter of VR for a decade, I felt like the train was about to leave the station for me.

Asgard’s Wrath 2 is a grand finale and new beginning for VR gaming
A player battles a four-legged beast in Asgard's Wrath 2.

I still distinctly remember my first experience playing a video game in VR. I was working at Rolling Stone when HTC came to the office to demo several experiences on its Vive headset. After playing some basic arcade games, I commented that I could really feel that the tech was in its Atari era. The simple game design made it clear that this was just the beginning for VR gaming, and that I shouldn’t expect it to match console gaming anytime soon. It was an experimental ride I was ready to take.

Playing Asgard’s Wrath 2 on a Meta Quest 3 one decade later, it feels like I’ve jumped 30 years into the future. Though games like Horizon: Call of the Mountain and Half-Life Alyx have delivered similarly impressive adventures over the past few years, Meta’s big exclusive takes the tech to a new peak. If those early games I played in my first VR demo were analogous to Atari 2600 games, this enormous RPG sequel takes me all the way to the Xbox 360 era. That’s a quantum leap forward in just 10 years.

The leaks are correct: Dragon’s Dogma 2 launches in March
A sphinx in Dragon's Dogma 2.

During a Dragon's Dogma 2 Showcase Tuesday afternoon, Capcom confirmed the worst-kept release date secret of recent weeks: Dragon's Dogma 2 launches on March 22, 2024. The livestream also revealed a lot more about the sequel, including the fact that it takes place in a parallel world to the original game.

We first noticed that this highly anticipated sequel to a cult classic RPG was launching in March 2024 earlier this month, when a PEGI game rating with the release date was spotted. While there was potential that this was just a clerical error as the listing was taken down, a release date around this time was again affirmed on Tuesday morning when that same date was listed on the game's Steam page. Capcom finally confirmed the release date itself at the end of the trailer that started the showcase, as Capcom's Hideaki Itsuno had promised on X on Monday.
