Peggle, Costume Quest 2 free with Xbox Live Gold in May

Xbox - May Games with Gold
Xbox Live Gold subscribers will see a new batch of free Xbox One and Xbox 360 games in May, including Double Fine’s RPG sequel Costume Quest 2 and PopCap’s peg-busting puzzler Peggle.

Next month’s featured Games with Gold lineup will be available for download starting on May 1, with additional freebies arriving on May 16.

Xbox One owners with an active Xbox Live Gold subscription can download developer Hidden Path Entertainment’s hit tower defense title Defense Grid 2 free of charge between May 1 and the end of the month. Funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign, Defense Grid 2 follows up on its Xbox 360 predecessor with new enemy types and upgradable towers.

Costume Quest 2 is next in line for the Games with Gold treatment, and will be free to download for service subscribers between May 16 and June 15. Costume Quest 2 continues the imagination-fueled adventures of a pair of superpowered twins who journey to save Halloween from an evil dentist.

Over on the Xbox 360, Codemasters’ sim-styled racer Grid 2 will be freely downloadable between May 1 and May 15. Xbox One owners can also pick up a playable copy of Grid 2 via the platform’s backward compatibility features.

This month’s Grid 2 giveaway appears to be part of a continuing partnership between Microsoft and publisher Codemasters. Microsoft previously gave away copies of Codemasters’ Dirt Showdown via Games with Gold in January, and series predecessor Dirt 3 was a featured freebie in November of 2015. It’s likely that additional Codemasters titles will be released for free in the coming months.

The Xbox Live Arcade version of PopCap’s classic puzzler Peggle is May’s final Games with Gold title. Boasting dozens of levels that players can demolish using an arsenal of destructive power-ups, Peggle will be free to download via Xbox 360 and Xbox One consoles between May 16 through the 31st.

Most games on Quest 2 are slightly more affordable than your typical PC or console title, yet they'll still run you around $20 each. That means between buying the headset and amassing a library of great titles, you could be looking at an entire month's worth of rent.

Thankfully, the Oculus Quest 2's catalog includes dozens of free games. Some of them are short demonstrations of VR technology, while others offer completely fleshed-out experiences. Regardless of their intent, these games allow you to take full advantage of your new Quest without having to dip into next month's budget. Here are the best free Oculus Quest 2 games.
