Upcoming PlayStation 4 Pro update will add 1080p/60fps streaming, report says

The PlayStation 4 is a great platform for connecting to an audience through services like Twitch, but up until now, stream quality has not been a high as it is on PC. The next PlayStation 4 system software update appears to be changing this, at least for those with a PlayStation 4 Pro console.

The PlayStation 4’s update 5.0 hasn’t actually been announced, but details have already been revealed through a Eurogamer report. We’ve reached out to Sony for confirmation and will update this piece if and when we receive a response.

Once the PlayStation 4 Pro has been updated, there will be an option for 1080p and 60fps quality. As of right now, players can choose to broadcast their streams at 60 frames per second, but the resolution is limited to 720p. The combination of higher resolution and framerate should let the PlayStation 4 Pro’s technical benefits shine through over a stream. Games like The Surge and Nioh can run quite smoothly on the beefier console, which is crucial for properly dodging and attacking enemies.

A few quality-of-life improvements are also being made. Previously, only verified developers and personalities could be “followed” on the PlayStation Network. Now, this will open up to anyone, allowing users to keep up to date on someone’s activity without actually having to add them as a friend. Notifications will now be viewable from the system’s quick menu, as well, so you can check on your downloads’ progress without actually having to exit to the main menu — of course, you’ll also likely get told there are “new events you might enjoy,” instead.

The previous major PlayStation 4 update, 4.5, added a few substantial features when it released earlier this year. Users can now use external hard drives on their system for the first time, which have been compatible with Xbox One for several years. 3D Blu-ray discs are also now viewable using the PlayStation VR headset, as Sony has apparently accepted the fact that no one owns or wants a 3D television anymore. 4.5 also added support for custom wallpapers for those who took a particularly nice game screenshot, as well as a new look for the quick menu.

The announcement that kicked off the show was Tekken 8. We saw some cutscenes and gameplay featuring Jin Kazama and Kazuya Mishima, and it looks just as impactful and satisfying as ever. In a PlayStation Blog post, Katsuhiro Harada explained that this content was taken straight from the game's story mode, and runs at 50 frames per second. It has no release date but is confirmed for PS5.

Rya Ga Gotoku: Ishin is getting a full remake treatment. This game was released for PS3 and PS4 in the early 2010s but never came to North America or Europe as the Yakuza series was not yet popular in the West at the time. It's now titled Like a Dragon: Ishin!, remade with Unreal Engine 4, and will be released for PS4 and PS5 in February 2023.

To wrap up the show, Sony revealed that a limited-edition DualSense wireless controller based on the next God of War game is launching on November 8 before providing a deeper look at God of War: Ragnarok. We saw more interactions between Kratos, Tyr, and Atreus, as well as some new gameplay featuring the awe-inspiring fantasy enemies and set pieces players will encounter during the game. God of War: Ragnarok launches on November 9.

Gravity Rush is the next PlayStation franchise to get the film treatment

Sony's PlayStation Productions film and television venture continues to ramp up, as a film based on the 2012 PlayStation Vita game Gravity Rush is in the works over at PlayStation Productions and Scott Free Productions, with a writer and director already attached.

According to Deadline, the adaptation is being directed by Anna Mastro (Secret Society of Second Born Royals) and written by Emily Jerome (Panopticon). However, the film's producers, distributor, and release window have all not been revealed just yet. For those unfamiliar with the Japanese PlayStation franchise, Gravity Rush follows a young woman named Kat with gravity-manipulating powers, who wakes up with amnesia in a city called Hekseville and has to defend it from a group of monsters called the Nevi. Gravity Rush was first released in 2012 for PlayStation Vita and was later ported to PlayStation 4 as a remaster. Gravity Rush 2 was released on PlayStation 4 in 2017.

Since then, Sony has stopped reporting the number of PS4 console shipments. Shipment numbers are different than the number of consoles actually sold, so there may be a discrepancy between the two.
