‘Heavy Rain’ and ‘Absolver’ are free with July’s PlayStation Plus

Developer Quantic Dream and Sony recently released the narrative adventure game Detroit: Become Human exclusively for PlayStation 4, and if you’ve been looking to dive into some of Quantic Dream’s other projects, now is your chance. Heavy Rain is among the free games offered through PlayStation Plus in July.

Available starting Tuesday, July 3, and running until the end of July, Heavy Rain will be available as a PlayStation 4 free game. Originally released as a PlayStation 3 exclusive in 2010, the murder- mystery features multiple playable characters and a story that can see the death of nearly anyone at a moment’s notice. It’s become particularly popular as a meme over the years, as well, with its famous “press X to ‘Jason'” scene perhaps being a little funnier than Quantic Dream had intended.

Also free in July is Absolver, a competitive melee game that we found to be both approachable and deep enough for dedicated players to spend hours with it. With the influx of new players sure to come in July, you shouldn’t have a problem finding a match. It also contains some player-versus-environment content and a basic story, serving as just enough of an excuse for you to go into battle and kick ass.

PlayStation 3 owners still get free games through PlayStation Plus until next year, and in July they will receive Rayman 3 HD, a remastered version of the classic Ubisoft platformer that typically sells for $10. Deception IV: The Nightmare Princess will be free, as well. It’s a bizarre “strategy” game that has you crushing enemies in elaborate traps, and though it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, there is an undeniable charm to it.

PlayStation Vita owners also continue to get free PlayStation Plus games until 2019, and they have a good selection in July. Zero Escape: Zero Time Dilemma will be free, and it’s the most recent entry in the dark puzzle-adventure series. Both previous games are also available on Vita. If you’re looking for something a bit more action-packed, Space Overlords delivers arcade-style combat as you travel to various planets and attempt to save the universe from the evil Kesedihan.

Animal Well will be part of the PS Plus Game Catalog from day one

Sony revealed the batch of video games that will come to PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra's Game Catalog over the next month. The headliners are three new day-one additions to the service, including the already-confirmed Tales of Kenzera: Zau and Dave the Diver as well as Animal Well.

Animal Well launches on May 9 and has caught Digital Trends' eye for being an eerie Metroidvania that won't hold players' hands as they explore. It is also the first game that will be published by Bigmode, a fledgling publisher founded by YouTuber Videogamedunkey. PS Plus Premium and Extra's game catalog had historically been less focused on games coming to the service on day one than has Xbox Game Pass, but that's finally starting to shift. While Tales of Kenzera: Zau comes out on April 23 and Animal Well will be released on May 9, Dave the Diver and the following PS1, PS4, and PS5 games will come to PS Plus' Game Catalog on April 16:

PS Plus Extra subscribers can try two of the month’s biggest PS5 games for free

Both Dave the Diver and Tales of Kenzera: ZAU will launch for PlayStation 5 this month, and both will included in PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra's Game Catalog from day one.

Dave the Diver will be the first to be added, as its PS5 port launches on April 16. Dave the Diver was a surprise hit when it was released for PC in 2023, standing out as a charming game where players go diving for the seafood they then serve in their sushi restaurant. While it was controversially nominated for best indie at The Game Awards despite being developed by Nexon studio Mintrocket, it's still a fantastic game and well worth your time when it finally launches on PS5 in a couple of weeks.

PlayStation Plus’ most notable free April offerings come from Microsoft

Sony outlined all the new offerings PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers can expect in April; surprisingly, Microsoft is the company behind two of this month's four offerings, Minecraft Legends, and the Overwatch 2 Mega Bundle.

On April 2, PS Plus can get those two things free of charge in addition to Immortals of Aveum and Skul: The Hero Slayer. Immortals of Aveum is a single-player shooter where players use magic instead of weapons. Although the thing it's most notable for is flopping upon its release, Immortals of Aveum is still a solid shooter that you might have missed out on, and you should give it a shot now that you can get it through PS Plus. Meanwhile, Skul: The Hero Slayer is a tough 2D platformer roguelike that should entertain fans of that genre for quite some time.
