Rumor: Metal Gear Solid 5 debuts at San Diego Comic-Con

rumor metal gear solid 5 debuts at san diego comic con announced sdcc

San Diego Comic-Con 2012 wasn’t as rich with surprises and delights for video game fans as it’s been in past years. High Moon Studios is making a Deadpool game, Capcom is resurrecting its 1999 fighter Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure as an HD re-release on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, and there may be a Darkstalkers 4. That’s all fun news, but it’s not exactly the sort of hype train that makes the Internet explode. Rumor is that there was at least one major announcement behind closed doors and it was appropriately stealthy.

Images of a purported teaser for Metal Gear Solid 5 appeared on Reddit and NeoGAF early on Monday. Though little more than text and some vague logo designs, the images definitely recall both the Metal Gear series’ aesthetics and the scant information available about the game.

The most significant detail is the subtitle “Open Ground Reconnaissance Endeavor,” which jives with the codename for Hideo Kojima’s first game for the newly developed FOX Engine, “Project OGRE.” Kojima described “Project Ogre” to CNN late last year as an open world game. “The kind of game I’m making is some game that has a very wide entrance, a very open entrance. Rather than making something very cinematic, [I plan] to make something very free.” An open ground reconnaissance endeavor certainly fits the bill.

Previous rumors that Metal Gear Solid 5 would return to the character Big Boss, Solid Snake’s father, and his time as the leader of independent military city state Outer Heaven are also born out by the images. Subtitles in the images read, “The moment we were cast out of heaven, we became monsters.”

Konami UK at first teased fans saying on Twitter saying, “Fake or real, we love a bit of speculation! #ogre #mgs5.” It then backtracked on Twitter and said, “Seriously, just in case the #pinch #salt hashtags weren’t enough—the chap who claims to have set up the fake rumors has been in touch.” According to Kotaku though, Konami US  still hasn’t confirmed definitively whether or not these images are real or fake.

Kojima Productions and Konami Japan will be hosting a 25th anniversary celebration for the Metal Gear series in August. It’s expected that the company will debut Metal Gear Solid 5 properly at that event, just weeks ahead of the Tokyo Game Show.

If Metal Gear Solid 5 is an open world game with less emphasis on cinematic elements, well, then it might just be the best thing to happen to the series. Bring it on, Kojima.
