‘Star Wars Battlefront II’ was YouTube’s most-viewed game of E3

E3 2017 has ended, and as the dust settles, we have begun to look forward to the onslaught of games releasing for the remainder of the year. But just what games are players most excited to get their hands on? According to YouTube, gamers are ready to go to a galaxy far, far away.

Compiling views across trailers, interviews, gameplay demonstrations, and “fan-uploaded reactions,” YouTube released its top 10 most-viewed games of E3 2017, which ran June 9-14. Somewhat unsurprisingly, Star Wars Battlefront II managed to top the list, as it received a huge amount of support from Electronic Arts during the week, including a half-hour multiplayer demonstration to end its press conference. The full list, which you can see below, includes three other games from the publisher.

  • Star Wars Battlefront II
  • Assassin’s Creed Origins
  • FIFA 18
  • Call of Duty: WWII
  • God of War
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man
  • Anthem
  • Need for Speed Payback
  • Dragon Ball FighterZ

The top four games on this list aren’t particularly surprising, particularly with the question marks surrounding both the Assassin’s Creed and Call of Duty franchises, but the buzz Electronic Arts has managed to build for BioWare’s Anthem is impressive. With just a few minutes of gameplay footage shown during Microsoft’s press conference, it got people talking. Similarly, Need for Speed Payback‘s short Burnout-like demonstration definitely has us optimistic for the series’ future at Ghost Games.

Battlefront II also topped the list of most-viewed trailers with almost 8 million hits, but Super Mario Odyssey managed to rack up about 5.5 million. The XCOM-like Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle even managed to take the eighth spot with 3 million views. If you haven’t had a chance to check out this bizarre strategy game, you can read our hands-on impressions here.

Bethesda appeared to be the “loser” in terms of YouTube views this year, with none of its games managing to crack the top 10, even though Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and The Evil Within 2 both had incredible announcement trailers — this may have been, at least partially, because the company’s conference began at midnight ET. Microsoft also failed to make a dent, though the surprise E3 hit Dragon Ball FighterZ was revealed during its press conference.

Sam Fisher's iconic goggles.

With the E3 2021 extravaganza rapidly coming to a close, it's time to reflect on the ways in which our hopes were dashed. There are already a ton of lists out there that recap everything presented at the show, but what about the games we didn't see?

With big players like Sony and EA skipping this year’s show, it was inevitable that there were going to be plenty of MIA games. Outside of the usual suspects, there was a slew of games we desperately wanted to see but that just didn’t make the cut. Regardless of whether these games (and one console) are stuck in development hell, delayed because of COVID-19, don’t actually exist, or are just waiting for a different day in the sun, here is a list of some of the biggest missing names from E3 2021.

The best games from E3 2021: Metroid Dread, Redfall, and more highlights
Redfall

Even when E3 is underwhelming, it still leaves players plenty to be excited about. This year’s all-digital expo was certainly quieter than previous years, but it did give us a much clearer picture of what we’ll be playing in 2021 and beyond.

A lot of that came from Microsoft, which dominated the four-day event with its 90-minute stream. The company made its strongest case yet for the Xbox Series X and Game Pass with games such as Starfield and Redfall. Not to be outdone, however, Nintendo came prepared with one of its strongest showings ever. Games including Metroid Dread and Wario Ware: Get It Together! were true surprises that captivated Switch owners. What were the overall best games of the show? Here were our favorites from the hit-and-miss four-day event.

Heading into the final day of E3 2021, there was a common sentiment going around social media: It was up to Nintendo to "save" this year's show. That was no easy task. E3 has largely been underwhelming this year outside of Microsoft's mega-showcase. Placing all of one's hopes and dreams on a company that often delivers uneven digital showcases felt like a recipe for disappointment. No matter how much Nintendo tried to set expectations in advance, fans were already setting themselves up for failure the night before as Mario Kart 9 trended on Twitter.

Against all odds, Nintendo delivered. The company put on its best Direct showcase in years with tons of surprises. Breath of the Wild 2 was the big reveal, but it was far from the most exciting announcement. Metroid Dread was a genuine shock, bringing a new original 2D Metroid to the Switch. We saw new a Wario Ware, Mario Party, Advance Wars, and way more. It was a mile-a-minute show, so here are all the biggest announcements.
