The makers of The Witcher discuss its new game, Cyberpunk

Following the announcement of its existence shortly before E3 in June, we haven’t heard much from Polish developer CD Projekt RED regarding their Witcher follow-up, Cyberpunk.

The name alone obviously brings to mind several preconceived regarding the cyberpunk theme, but the game itself is still something of a mystery. To satiate the fans, the developer decided to open itself up and answer a few questions on its website.

Marcin Momot, community manager for CD Projekt RED fielded the questions, and discussed such things as the influences for the game, the affect choosing a particular class can have, customization, and more:

Richie79: What elements are you using as inspiration (references) for making Cyberpunk?

Marcin Momot: There are quite a few actually. Aside from the obvious ones like the works of William Gibson or the Blade Runner movie, we also take from the first Ghost in the shell, both anime and manga. We’re also looking up to ShellShock because of its interesting approach to gameplay. The first part of Deus Ex is also a very important source of inspiration to us.

Guipit: Will choosing your class affect the story? If so, how much?

MM: It’s always been very important to us to deliver mature and ambitious entertainment. It’s not going to be any different this time around. We want to keep the role system from the pen & paper version of Cyberpunk. As opposed to the regular fantasy set-up with mages, warriors and archers, we’re going for something different. In Cyberpunk, each character role will offer a set of special skills that will impact your stats in many different ways. That’s where the challenge kicks in, we want to create a game where character customization will be strongly tied with the plot. Now going from that, we believe that we can make a game where, with many different role choices, you will get a very strong, engaging story, just like it was with The Witcher.

Mihura: Will there be full customization of our character like a D&D game, things like gender, ethnicity, moral stand point, sexuality…etc or we will be restrict to something like Geralt from TW2?

MM: We definitely want to give players way more freedom with customization of the main protagonist then they had with Geralt in The Witcher series. We are planning on letting them change their statistics, equipment, implants and much more.

Saoe: When can we expect to see more info, screenshots or first videos from the game?

MM: I keep bothering guys from the art team to release some new content soon but they don’t want to listen to me for some reason. I won’t give up though, so make sure to follow our website and social media because when I finally convince them, you will be the first ones to know.

Geralt The Riv: Will the setting be a totally new designed by CDPR(You know like name of the planet, country, state, city etc) or just a mimic of a current location?(New York, L.A. Miaimi etc…..)

MM: Cyberpunk’s story takes place all over the world, but we’re going to focus on it’s most characteristic venue – Night City. One thing is certain, we want to make a game with an open, living world that stays true to the source material.

No word yet on when we can expect the game to be released or what system(s) it will be on, but that should be coming in the coming weeks and months.

The rehabilitation of Cyberpunk 2077 finally culminates in both the release of the 2.0 update and the substantial DLC expansion called Phantom Liberty. Between these two, plus all the changes made in the years since launch, the once unstable and buggy game is finally living up to its potential. While everything up until this point has been free, including the 2.0 changes, Phantom Liberty is the first and only piece of paid content. Giving players an entirely new area in Dogtown to explore, plus a lengthy main story and tons of new side missions, it's the biggest reason to reinstall this ambitious title. But how exactly can you start the DLC since it is meant to slot into the story of the main game rather than take place before or after? We've hacked in and downloaded all the data you need on how to start the Phantom Liberty DLC.
How to start Phantom Liberty
There are actually a few different ways to get into Phantom Liberty depending on your preference and whether or not you've played the base game. The easiest way to get directly into it is through the main menu. With the DLC installed, you will have an option to jump directly into the expansion, even if you haven't played the main game yet. This sounds great for those who want to see the new stuff right away, but it isn't recommended if you haven't played the base game at all. You will be given a character automatically leveled up and placed at the proper point in the story for the DLC to take place with no context or tutorial on how to play. Note that picking this option doesn't lock you out of any of the base game content.

For new players who want to experience Phantom Liberty more naturally, you will need to play the opening hours of Cyberpunk 2077 until you complete the "Transmission" mission before the quest that starts the DLC will trigger.

Unity clarifies what types of game installs count toward its new Runtime Fee

Unity angered lots of game developers earlier today when it unveiled its upcoming Unity Runtime Fee program, which takes a cut every time a Unity game is installed. It is particularly harsh for smaller developers using Unity Personal, as they will be $0.20 per install if their game makes over $200,000 within 12 months and gets over 200,000 lifetime game installs. There has been a lot of confusion over what exactly Unity defines as a "game install" in an industry full of subscription services, game bundles, and piracy. Digital Trends reached out to get clarification on what counts, and Unity responded.

When it comes to the multitude of ways players can acquire games, Unity says developers don't need to worry about fees related to trials, bundles, and giveaways. That said, developers who put their games in a subscription service like Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Plus Premium will need to take these fees into account."Demos, trials, game bundles, and giveaways like the Humble Bundle do not count as installs," a Unity spokesperson tells Digital Trends. "Subscription services, like Game Pass, do count as an install."

South Park is getting a new game next year, and it’s a 3D action game

A brand new South Park game was shown during today's THQ Nordic Digital Showcase 2023. South Park: Snow Day! is a 3D isometric action game that supports multiplayer and will release next year.

South Park has a somewhat rocky history with video games. Things started out with some bad titles in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but Ubisoft released the solid RPGs South Park: The Stick of Truth and South Park: The Fractured But Whole throughout the 2010s. THQ Nordic, which has dipped its toe into licensed games with two SpongeBob titles, first teased a new South Park game at the end of last year's showcase. We hadn't heard about the game again until today when the announcement for South Park: Snow Day! kicked off this year's presentation.
As its title suggests, South Park: Snow Day! follows Cartman, Kyle, Stan, and Kenny as they play with each other on a snow day and take things way too far, turning the town into a war zone. Strange Scaffold's Xalavier Nelson Jr. confirmed that he provided writing on the game. We see a little bit of gameplay in its reveal trailer, and it looks like a multiplayer isometric action game in the style of something like Diablo 4 or Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. Unlike the last two South Park games, this one's in 3D.

Outside of that, we don't know much else about South Park: Snow Day! Hopefully, we'll learn more at Gamescom 2023 and as it approaches release. South Park: Snow Day! will be released for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch in 2024.
