The Switch 2 supports ray-tracing and DLSS, but Nintendo is tight-lipped on details

Update April 3 12 PM: Nvidia has released the official blog on its hardware inside the Nintendo Switch 2, and it’s a doozy. The company says it has more than 1,000 engineer-years worth of effort across the entire system. On top of that, it utilizes Tensor Cores for its DLSS features, as well as for AI-powered face tracking and background removal during GameChat. If you recall the GameChat demonstration, players were able to overlay just their heads on their gameplay.

The Switch 2 has ten times the graphics performance of the original Switch and uses dedicated ray-tracing (RT) Cores to enhance lighting and reflections in-game. It also uses Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) through Nvidia G-Sync to reduce screen tearing during gameplay and deliver smoother performance.

Original story: After yesterday’s Nintendo Switch 2 reveal, Nintendo held several roundtable Q&A sessions in New York City and answered fans’ burning questions about the console. In these sessions, Nintendo revealed that the Switch 2 does in fact utilize Deep Learning Super Sampling, or DLSS, as well as ray tracing visual technology — but the company remains mum on how exactly it all works.

Leaks earlier in the year suggested that Nintendo might use some form of AI upscaling tech (and that’s exactly what DLSS is) with the intent of keeping game sizes small enough to fit on the cartridge without sacrificing 4K resolution. DLSS is an Nvidia technology, and Nintendo confirmed the Switch 2 does use an Nvidia GPU. As for details, Tetsuya Sasaki, GM of Nintendo’s Technology Development Division, said “Nintendo doesn’t share too much on the hardware spec. What we really like to focus on is the value that we can provide to our consumers. But I do believe that our partner Nvidia will be sharing some information.”

The DLSS implementation is particularly interesting and opens up a lot of potential for developers. Just like with the Xbox Series and the PlayStation 5, it’s possible games could offer both graphics and performance modes. According to Takuhiro Dohta, senior director of the Programming Management Group Entertainment Planning & Development Department, as transcribed by IGN:

“We use DLSS upscaling technology and that’s something that we need to use as we develop games.

“And when it comes to the hardware, it is able to output to a TV at a max of 4K. Whether the software developer is going to use that as a native resolution or get it to upscale is something that the software developer can choose. I think it opens up a lot of options for the software developer to choose from.”

When asked about the Switch 2‘s ray capabilities, Dohta said, “Yes the GPU does support ray tracing. As with DLSS, I believe this provides yet another option for the software developer to use and a tool for them.”

Nintendo provided a lot of information but left out the finer details. It’s likely that we’ll have to wait until we get our hands on a Switch 2 console to confirm the exact internal components, but the mere fact it’s capable of higher-end graphical technology like ray tracing and DLSS is a great sign. It suggests the Switch 2 is more powerful than initially let on, and that Nintendo might finally be closing the graphical gap between itself and its competitors.

Deltarune is one of the most-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 launch games, and now its creator Toby Fox says it's getting exclusive, mouse-mode-only content. Fox assures fans that the content will also be in other versions of the game, but it will play slightly differently due to different control schemes.

"As an effort to make the most of being a launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2, I really wanted to try do something special," he writes. He says the difference in content lies in being able to use mouse controllers on both of the Joy-Cons at once. All non-Switch 2 versions of the game will have the exact same content. Before the FOMO kicks in, though, Fox goes on to say, "There is no meaningful difference in content amount, dialogue, setting, music etc between any version, so you will have a full package of fun no matter which you get! No one gets left out!"

It was a presentation filled with surprises too, from a shocking Kirby Air Riders reveal to the announcement that GameCube games are coming to Nintendo Switch Online. I experienced some real shockers of my own when I went hands-on with the Switch 2 and found myself enamored with its new control scheme.

I've had a lot of time to process all the news since then, and even changed my tune on things I was initially critical of, like GameChat. Sitting down to reflect, there's one thing that still surprises me more than anything: just how next-gen the system actually feels.

Switch 2 woes cross the border as Nintendo delays preorders in Canada

Nintendo Switch 2 troubles have been extended to our neighbors north of the border. Pre-orders for the highly-anticipated hybrid console have been delayed in Canada just before they were slated to begin.

Jonathan Ore, senior writer for CBC Radio Online, shared a statement from Nintendo of Canada on Bluesky on Tuesday saying pre-orders for the Switch 2 have been delayed in the country to "align with the timing of pre-orders" in the United States. The statement reads as follows:
