Big players like Dailymotion and bigger players like YouTube have Twitch in their sights, but for the foreseeable future it seems that the site will remain the go-to place to watch your favorite gamers’ broadcasts. And while the Twitch apps for iOS and Android are perfectly fine, today they’re getting an update that significantly improves their usability.

This latest update to the Twitch app for iOS and Android introduces something users have been looking forward to for a long time: a persistent player. It’s now possible to browse through other content without having to leave the stream you’re watching behind.

Once you’re watching a stream, if you start to browse through other games and channels, the player will shrink and moves to the top of the page. If you want to get rid of the player, simply swipe it away.

This is a nice way to look for other streams without committing to leaving your current one behind, but it won’t really be a great way to actually watch another stream as you’re browsing. While it might be large enough to watch on a tablet, on a phone’s screen it won’t be easy to make out much of anything in the shrunk player. Audio, however, will continue to play.

Speaking of audio, Android users are also getting a sound-related feature in today’s update. Audio Only mode allows broadcasts to continue to run while your phone is locked or when the app is running in the background. This feature must be explicitly enabled in order to work — to enable it, simply tap the video options icon and select Audio Only mode. Because this mode can also be controlled via system notifications, you won’t ever have to worry about it running out of control.

Only phones running Android 4.3+ will be able to use the persistent player, Twitch notes in its blog post announcing the new features.

The 6 biggest iOS 17 features that Apple stole from Android
iOS 17 logo on an iPhone, Android logo on an Android phone.

Apple made a big splash at WWDC 2023 this year, with the big headline announcement being the Vision Pro augmented reality headset. But we also got a glimpse of what’s to come with iOS 17, iPadOS 17, watchOS 10, and macOS 14 Sonoma.

Though iOS 17 appears to be more of a quiet release this year that focuses on refinement and quality-of-life improvements, I have mixed feelings overall. To be honest, I was a little underwhelmed with the iOS 17 announcement based on what was actually shown off on stage, but there are some very cool features that Apple didn’t make a big deal out of (when it should have).

iOS 17’s coolest new feature is horrible news for Android users
iOS 17 contact posters

At the end of 2022, Google implored Apple to “get the message” and end the green-versus-blue bubble controversy by adopting RCS messaging. Apple’s response eventually came at WWDC 2023, where it introduced a new iOS 17 feature called Contact Posters, which instead of bringing everyone together, only furthers the us-versus-them split between Android and iOS.

If you thought the green/blue iMessage arguments could get fiery, there’s a lot more to come.

apple launches ios 16 5 new pride wallpapers more wallpaper update

After about a month in the beta testing stage, Apple is finally rolling out iOS 16.5 to the public. This is a surprisingly nice update, as it includes a few new features and some bug fixes.

One of the headliner features of the iOS 16.5 update is the addition of new Pride Celebration wallpapers. This wallpaper can be used for the lock and home screens, and it is meant to honor the LGBTQ+ community and culture. This wallpaper is being released ahead of the Apple Watch Pride Edition Sport Band, which will be available starting on May 24.
