A game starring Star Wars: The Phantom Menace bad guy Darth Maul was in development back in 2010, but now all that remains is a leaked clip containing a bit of gameplay. The game was commissioned by LucasArts and under development at indie dev Red Fly Studio, but it was cancelled after eight months, according to an upcoming story from Game Informer.

There isn’t a whole lot to see, but what’s there should be enough to make most Star Wars fans mourn what could have been. The game would have starred the Sith apprentice in an action game that, stylistically, isn’t far removed from Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

The game was eventually cancelled thanks in part to Star Wars creator George Lucas, who wanted the project to become a “buddy cop-like experience” with Darth Maul and Darth Talon cavorting around the galaxy, according to Eurogamer. While that sounds dumb, it’s also a something we’d expect from the guy that gave us Jar Jar Binks.

We may never know what happened to that potentially horrible buddy-Sith game, but there’s hope now for the interactive future of the series with Electronic Arts behind the wheel of the Star Wars video game properties.

Disney confirms, then retracts Star Wars Outlaws release window
Kay Vass joined by her small alien companion called Nix in a futuristic city.

The first couple months of 2024 are jam-packed with games like Tekken 8, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Princess Peach Showtime, but the fall calendar is currently much more of a mystery. An article from Disney today claimed that Star Wars Outlaws would be one of the fall's most notable AAA releases, but Ubisoft has since corrected that error and is keeping the highly anticipated game's release window at a vague "2024" for now.

Developed by Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora studio Massive Entertainment, Star Wars Outlaws looks like it will be an ambitious open-world game that will follow young smuggler named Kay Vess and her struggles during the time period between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. It looks like the closest thing we'll ever get to a Star Wars version of Red Dead Redemption 2. Star Wars Outlaws impressed with showings at June 2023's Xbox Games Showcase and Ubisoft Forward, and previously only had a vague 2024 release window."

2023 set an incredibly high bar for video game sequels
A screenshot from The Story So Far in Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

It's not an overstatements to say that 2023 was one of the best years for video game sequels ever.

Simply looking at The Game Awards 2023’s Game of the Year nominations, all of which are titles from preexisting series, proves that. It’s not just that we received a lot of new video game sequels in 2023; that happens every year. No, what makes the game sequels of 2023 stand out is how many of them impressively build upon what came before. From Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 to Baldur’s Gate 3, these follow-ups all looked at their predecessor, identified the weaker aspects, and directly addressed those issues.
