Well… at least God of War Laufey is getting a physical disc

Last week, Sony lit the gaming community on fire by announcing that all new PlayStation games released from January 2028 onwards would be digital-only, effectively bringing an end to physical discs for future releases. At the same time, the company also confirmed it would shut down the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita digital stores by July 2027, reinforcing concerns that digital storefronts and the games tied to them don’t last forever. Unsurprisingly, the announcements triggered widespread backlash from collectors and long-time PlayStation fans. In the middle of all that, Santa Monica Studio offered a surprisingly comforting update: God of War Laufey will be available on disc. It’s only one sentence, but it says a lot.

More than just a physical release

The confirmation came as part of Santa Monica Studio’s San Diego Comic-Con announcement, where the team revealed a God of War Laufey panel featuring Game Director Ariel Lawrence, Head of Creative Cory Barlog, Deborah Ann Woll (who plays Laufey), Christopher Judge, Jack Quaid, and Perlina Lau. While the panel promises behind-the-scenes stories and a closer look at the game’s new heroes, it was a follow-up post that really caught fans’ attention: “We can confirm God of War Laufey will be available on disc.”

That reassurance comes at a time when physical media has become one of gaming’s hottest talking points. With Sony winding down disc production for future PlayStation games and Rockstar recently confirming that physical editions of Grand Theft Auto 6 will simply include a download code in the box, collectors have become understandably nervous whenever a major title is announced.

There’s another interesting detail hidden inside that confirmation. God of War Laufey still doesn’t have an official release date — or even a release window. But if the game is shipping on a physical disc, it almost certainly means Santa Monica Studio is targeting a launch before Sony’s January 2028 deadline for new physical PlayStation releases. Interestingly, industry speculation has already pointed toward an early 2027 release, potentially around February or March. While Sony hasn’t confirmed that timeline, the disc announcement certainly doesn’t contradict those expectations.

Why this matters

The backlash isn’t just about collectors wanting a plastic box on a shelf. It’s about ownership. Between Sony ending physical discs for future PlayStation games and preparing to close the PS3 and PS Vita digital stores next year, many players see this as proof that digital purchases and storefronts can eventually disappear. That’s why debates around preserving, lending, trading, and truly owning games have become louder than ever.

Perhaps that’s why this tiny confirmation resonated so strongly. In any other year, “the game will be on disc” wouldn’t even qualify as news. In 2026, though, it’s enough to reassure collectors, fuel release-window speculation, and become one of the biggest talking points surrounding God of War Laufey, all from a single sentence on X.
