Surprise balance between F-Stop, Focal Length, Sharpness, and price

Surprise balance between F-Stop, Focal Length, Sharpness, and price
I used this lens with a Canon R and a Night Sky light pollution filter. This lens does accept 77mm filters, where many other lenses do not. I was one click above maximum aperture. I did find that the Infinity Mark on this lens was off, but it is a good practice to verify infinity focus on any attempt to manually focus with any lens. I found that the Rokinon 14mm SP f2.4 is slightly sharper, but this lens appears to be just as sharp as the Tamron 15 to 30 SP f2.8. The color seems slightly cooler than the Tamron. Remember to set your Canon camera, including the RP to Release shutter without lens attached to ON.

5.0 out of 5 stars Initial thoughts when unboxing was this lens is pretty sizable and weighty
Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2018
I’ve recently upgraded from the a6000 + Samyang 12mm to an a7ii + this Rokinon 20mm (I shoot mostly landscape but initially got into shooting because of my interest in astrophotography - thanks lonelyspeck!!!)

It was a toss up between this Rokinon 20mm 1.8 and the 24mm 1.4, but I ended up with the 20mm because it was close to the perspective I had with my a6000 +12mm (cropped 12mm = 18mm).

Initial thoughts when unboxing was this lens is pretty sizable and weighty. Definitely a bigger profile from what I was used to. I found myself supporting both body and lens when walking around handheld, but that may be because I’m used to a smaller setup. But balance isn’t really an issue for me as I shoot 90% with a tripod. You are taking away from the whole compactness of using a mirrorless system when it seems like you adding 2lbs and 10inches. Again, my opinion, I do like the look of a big lens..

The build quality is great, with great controls. Focus ring is smooth but isn’t as damp as the Samyang 12mm (which I like). I found myself hitting the focus ring out of position more often. One plus is that infinity is truly on the infinity mark, unless the samyang 12mm. Image quality is also great, though when shooting portrait orientation there is a noticeable distortion towards the edges, but thats expected with a wide angle lens. Decently sharp wide open and impressively sharp a couple stops down…not sure what else I can say. This is a good buy, especially compared to the other full framed lenses out there where you’ll be paying a mortgage.
