A lot better than the early reviews...
Nine months since the launch of the product, it's clear Microsoft have fixed a lot of the bugs reported by the initial reviewers. In fact, the device goes through a LOT of updates in the initial start up process. After a couple of days of use I haven't encountered any bugs that significantly impact usability.A few other thoughts:- The hardware is an amazing design, with an outstanding 360 degree hinge. It certainly feels premium, and it's barely thicker than my Samsung Galaxy S20.- The dual-screen form factor is really useful. It's great to be able to pull up my personal and work calendars side-by-side for example, or look at Google Maps on one screen and a browser on the other.- The book "posture" is superb for using it as an e-reader with the Kindle or Readly apps, whilst in landscape mode tapping away on the bottom screen is effortless for writing texts or e-mails. This is where the dual rather than folding screen approach shines through.- The wider screen, even in single screen mode, is more engaging than the thinner, longer screens of traditional candy-bar phones. Who knew?- The USB-C port reportedly breaks very easily, and it certainly looks quite fragile. Indeed the whole device appears beautiful, but brittle. A metal chassis rather than one covered in Gorilla Glass might have been a better choice. I'll see how well it holds up over time.- A number of features are missing that you would expect from a premium phone, so check out the specs carefully. Whilst the device is wonderfully thin and light, I feel those compromises might have gone too far. I can live without a 3.5mm jack, high-end camera(s), SD card slot, outside screen, 5G, two day battery, stereo speakers etc., but wireless charging is a big miss in 2021, especially for a device that has a delicate charging port and a relatively small battery.- The hinge makes viewing movies across both screens unworkable, but folding screen phones aren't much better because of their squarish ratio doesn't leave much screen space for actual content. A cheap 16:9 ratio tablet is still a better media consumption device. That said, viewing a movie in the tent posture is about the same experience as a typical 6"+ candy bar phone.- The version of Microsoft Launcher is NOT the same as that for other Android devices, I'd like to add more buttons to the taskbar, and change the grid settings, but that's not an option. If you don't like the Microsoft Launcher, good luck finding another one that recognizes the Duo's unique screen layout.- Cost: its launch price of $1,500 is just too much for a device like this, especially as I don’t think a dual screen should command the same premium that a folding screen can.- Ergonomics wise, it comfortably fits in a pocket, which I was doubtful about before it arrived. However, using it as phone without a headset or earbuds is faintly ridiculous. In the end, the bargain basement prices right now provide a great opportunity to try out the format. There’s a trade off between screen real estate and the size / weight of a phone. In the past, I’ve found a bigger phone to be just that – the same functionality, just bigger. The dual-screen format actually offers more. Sure, it’s a first gen edition but the bugs seem to have been largely ironed out.

I’ll start by saying that I’ve been using this as a secondary device. I have a data sim in it and use it in conjunction with an iPhone mini. So as a singular phone I can’t speak to its functionality but I’ve been using it to text on messenger, browse social media and stream content.

Media Consumption: wonderful, the OLED panel on this thing has inky blacks, vibrant colours, and crisp visuals. Watching shows, YouTube, and such is great and the speaker isn’t tinny for a phone. Definitely a pleasure for media consumption. I also use this as an e-reader which tbh I’ve never felt comfortable with in the past. Something about single page displays never worked well in my mind, but holding this like a book works perfectly. Manga in particular is great to read as the blacks are deep and the contrast is clean. I read through the entirety of Dragonball Super in about a month using this exclusively.

Multitasking/Productivity: Wow, this is where things take a big shift. I’ve used iPads and other tablets over the years heavily. Whether doing creative content creation, DMing, writing, content viewing etc, this is hands down the best portable multitasking device. The separate displays lend themselves to such easy and functional multitasking that it’s honestly a wonder to me why more companies haven’t leaned into this. I never want to be without a device like this moving forward.

Example: Have you ever been watching a video on your phone and thought about looking up what is being talked about? If you have YouTube premium for example, sure the audio continues to play when you exit, but the video itself is gone. On another android device maybe it shrinks to a window, or on a tablet a split view occurs, but on here you just use the other screen, there isn’t a compromise. It’s hard to explain but it’s something that once you use it, it makes so much sense and you’ll notice when you don’t have it.

Overall fantastic, especially at this lower price point. I would be tempted in the future to make it my single device but for now in pair with my iPhone is great. I have run into a single issue, which sometimes it think I have it folded back to select a display, which is annoying but usually it stops if I close the device, wait a few seconds, and open again. There was one instance where I had to power cycle to fix it. Other than that, battery life, functionality and enjoyment have been superb.

Full disclosure: I bought this device as a secondary device. A small portable tablet mostly for at-home use. And for that use case, it is an incredible value. It does take some time to get used to the form factor as each individual screen is wider than your average iPhone, Pixel, or Galaxy screen. It is almost reminiscent in width of the old BlackBerry Passport from years ago.

When you start using this device, you start to see the benefit of having two screens. Opening a link in an email that just opens on a second screen. Browsing Twitter on one screen and watching a video on the other. It is a true multitasking champ. It's only been a few days but the performance has been overall pretty smooth, with a few frame drops here and there but nothing that is a deal breaker.

I have been using this as a reading device to catch up on the news, manage my accounts, and so on. I will say that the camera is not good. It's perfectly fine as a webcam but that's about it, which makes this hard to recommend as your primary phone. And because of the aspect ratio, some social media apps like Instagram might present themselves as a little weird.

This phone is just so much fun to use and I am sure you will find ways to utilize its very unique form factor the more that you use it. The gap in the middle does make spanning both screens a little challenging depending on the app but I actually like reading articles using this method in portrait orientation. So the bottom line is if you are looking for a secondary device as a compact tablet or even if you are looking for a good phone at a great price and camera performance isn't important to you, this is a great buy!

This is my first two-screen mobile device, and it was really just an impulse purchase to supplement my normal phone.

    HARDWARE REVIEW:
It looks pretty ridiculous in my jeans pocket, but it does fit. It's such a weird form factor because the screens feel both tall and wide. Forget about using a case with this, but the included bumper is actually decent enough and gives it some grippy-ness on a table. I'm sure some day one of the glass surfaces will crack and then I'll be sad, but until then it looks great. Hardware wise this thing is marvel of engineering, and it's a complete head-turner. I have gotten multiple "WHAT IS THAT?!?" type of reactions from coworkers when I unfold it, and that's saying something. I love that the screens fold completely 180 and fold completely flat. I love the glacier white color and all the glass. The fingerprint reader works well enough. I don't use the camera because everyone says it sucks anyway, and my normal Pixel 5 takes great pics so I will continue using that if I need a camera. Battery life is good enough from what I have seen so far.
    Rating: 5/5

    SOFTWARE REVIEW:
Having two screens opens up a surprising amount of productivity and new ways to use a phone-like device. Basic things that are frustrating on tiny phones are easy on this device. Opening one app, copying some text, opening a second app, pasting the text - now trivially easy to do. On another phone it's awful and slow, but on this device you can just have both apps open at once and seamlessly copy data/text/etc. between them. I was looking for a new camera lens and I was easily able to multitask searching, youtube video reviews, look up prices, etc. I like that I can just flip the screens/orientation dynamically based on what I'm doing, and it's more of a delight than using a tablet.

Where this device becomes frustrating is that it doesn't reach its full potential. For example, apps like Gmail and Edge browser are mostly optimized for the two screens which is great, but they each have quirks that make them less than perfect. Gmail doesn't allow you to resize the windows and you pretty much just get one layout. On Edge browser, you cannot open two separate windows so that you can have two tabs open at once. You can kinda-sorta do that but it's frustrating, because it only works if you long-press a URL link and select "Open on other window". In other words you cannot simply drag a tab from one screen to another like you can with an app. You also cannot have two instances of Edge open. So it's like 80% what I want it to be, but that other 20% is really frustrating. It seems like 2-screen web browsing would be one of the biggest selling points of the device but they haven't quite reached that "native integration" type of of experience. Also, not many apps are optimized for the two screens. Some apps are "good enough" at using two screens, such as 'Infinity for Reddit', but if you want to customize the layout you cannot do it. In contrast, most apps simply do not work well across both screens due to the screen border. Some apps and webpages scale weird. If I want to watch a video on my reddit app, I basically have to keep the app constrained to one display, because the app/phone isn't smart enough not to span the video across the gap between the displays.

Another thing I noticed is that the display refresh isn't perfect, it feels slightly laggy compared to other flagship devices these days. The specs claim 60hz but sometimes it feels less. Also when you scroll your finger on one screen, sometimes the other screen lags behind just a bit in the scrolling, but that's just a minor nitpick.

The Kindle app is an absolutely perfect implementation for reading books and is optimized for both displays.

Regarding the software keyboard (Microsoft SwiftKey), it's actually fantastic and I love all of the customizability. You can change the keyboard layout type, size, span type, etc. It's super easy to switch on the fly. You can set a floating keyboard and position it where you want. You can make it a two-handed thumb keyboard split between both screens. You can resize both vertical and horizontal to match your actual thumb reach. You can change the keyboard layout (qwerty, dvorak, etc.), and you can add a number row or arrow keys, etc. You can set it up as a one-handed keyboard on either screen. It's just such a well thought-out keyboard design, I absolutely love it and it is a pleasure to use. It also has a great clipboard manager that lets you pin items for quick restore. The keyboard itself is a 5/5.

    Software Rating: 3.5/5

    OVERALL:
Ultimately I enjoy this device once you get used to the limitations. When you figure out the strengths and stick to that, it's great. I love the workflow improvements compared to my other devices and I love the keyboard versatility. The current value is insane when you look at how cheap it is now compared to the original launch price, it's a no-brainer at this price if you want a second device. Plus MS keep updating the software and now it has Android 12, and the device is even better for it.
    Overall Rating: 4.5/5

A marvel of technological creativity. I used LG G8X Thinq duel screen mobile which costs almost the same to Microsoft Surface Duo but the later has several technical advantages including much lighter weight, larger display and slimmer size. Battery although is not upto the mark for double display but it's satisfactory. Convenient to use by one hand. Browser spread across both the screens make it a 8 inch tablet. On the other hand, two separate screens enable multi tasks at the same time. Surface pen works like a brush, quite smoothly. However I think 6 GB RAM is not sufficient for this excellent gadget. LTE works fine (not compatible with 5G). Wireless charging facility might have been protective for the ultra slim USB C charging port. In summary, it is worth buying for tech savvy people.

NOTE after a month: Two days after the return windows closed, the display started showing glitches. First the colour temperature of the left display became different than the right one. Then the right display started fluctuating and then flashing bright green light. An internet search about the glitch indicated that this is a common problem. Following the suggestion provided at Microsoft's site, I reset the unit to factory setting. Although it was hectic to reinstall all data and applications but the problem was solved completely. No more glitch or fluctuation in any of the two displays and no colour difference. This was a software problem.
