ASUS STRIX GeForce GTX 970 Overclocked
ASUS Strix GTX 980 gaming graphics cards packed with exclusive ASUS technologies, including DirectCU II for cooler, quieter and faster performance for incredible action gaming, and 0dB fan technology for light gameplay in total silence and Blu-ray movie playback that's free from distracting background noise. Strix GTX 980 features exclusive ASUS DIGI+ voltage-regulator module (VRM) technology and 10-phase Super Alloy Power components for enhanced durability and cooling. Strix GTX 980 has 4GB of high-speed GDDR5 video memory.
30% cooler. Silent gaming.
Exclusive DirectCU II cooling technology outperforms reference designs with an exclusive 10mm heatpipe that transports 40% more heat away from the GPU — a first for the industry! The design also includes 220%-larger heat-dissipation: this means performance that's 30% and three-times (3X) quieter than reference for ultra-stable hardcore gaming with very low noise. And Strix ups the ante still further with 0dB fan technology that lets you enjoy games like League of Legends and StarCraft in complete silence — because the fan stops completely when the GPU temperature remains below a set level.
30% less power noise and 2.5X greater durability
Acclaimed DIGI+ VRM has been applied via a 10-phase power design that uses digital voltage regulators to minimize power noise by 30%, enhance power efficiency by 15%, widen voltage modulation tolerance, and improve overall stability and longevity by 2.5 times over reference.

I purchased a second card after Amazon got some more in stock and am trying out SLI for my rig. I've lucked out again, this second card also has no coil whine whatsoever. Second, I've noticed idle temperatures with two cards is actually better. I'm no longer having the issue where the temperature creeps up past the threshold anymore. When using Photoshop (which does use the GPU) I found that the temperatures top out at 42C with 2 cards in my system, where with 1 card I was getting close to 65C, and then the fans would kick in. In my original review I thought this was an airflow problem but I did a lot of testing and found that improving the airflow at the cost of silence did not help the situation. Photoshop uses the GPU more than I thought.
When gaming, the fans do kick in but I find that thanks to the excellent noise signature of the fans, I don't find them bothersome at all. There is no weird phasing noises (where fans are running at different speeds due to temperature difference) that I noticed when running GTX 670's in SLI.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
As a silent PC enthusiast who still likes to game from time to time, I look for the card that has best silence vs. performance trade off. The Asus Strix 970 was definitely appealing, I've read the card turns the fans off when in idle and that when the fans are on, it is still pretty quiet.
I replaced my EVGA GTX 670 FTW with this card and for the first two days, the experience has been very positive. I run a very quiet rig, I have a 4770K with an Asus Maximus VI Hero mobo and a Noctua NH-U14S cooler. I have them in a Fractal Design Define R4 case which I have lined with AcoustiPack foam and I use a KingWin Lazer Platinum 1KW power supply. The card was bigger than I expected but fits fine in this case. I should of noticed in the picture how far the cooler extends from the PCI bracket, but large fans are a good thing for noise.
So, the elephant in the room: coil whine. Mine hasn't exhibited it and I've tried quite a few games...so far, so good! I must be one of the lucky ones or my ears just don't hear it. Is it totally silent? Sometimes. I like that it turns the fans off during idle, but I've found that after I've played a game that my temps tend to fluctuate. So much so that it hits the threshold and you can hear the fans start up periodically. It's like the card gets cool enough, fans turn off, heats back up, fans turn on again. If it weren't for the starting voltage required for the fans, you wouldn't notice. I did notice with 670 that it would run warmer at idle when I connected more than one monitor (the card goes into a different mode) and I'm guessing the same thing is going on here. My PC has a 3 monitor setup.
For most games it is really quiet! Far Cry 3 runs at max settings effortlessly and quietly. I found using the recommended settings via Geforce Experience for games like Diablo 3, it will enable the Dynamic Super Resolution (DSR) feature. This feature makes the GPU work pretty hard, and thus the fans are roaring along at 70-80%. Visually I didn't really see the benefit of that feature on my 2560x1440 screen, at least with Diablo 3 or Starcraft 2, so I'm not going to bother with it. Turn it off and enjoy the silence!
The fans are audible in my rig but of all the cards I've owned, I'd say these fans have the most pleasing noise signature. My 670 had kind of an odd buzz quality to it as the fans sped up and my GTX 260 and 285 both were too loud for a quiet rig. The 780 ACX has an odd rattle that got worse at different fan speeds, by far the most annoying. The Strix cooler doesn't have that problem and the noise signature is not objectionable.
Pros:
- Fantastic performance for the price
- Strix cooler seems very efficient
- Fans have a pleasing noise signature when audible
- Extra features are nice: custom cooler, backplate, "free" game, for $350
Cons:
- Not totally silent
- 0db Idle feature may not work all the time if your case doesn't have pretty good airflow
I'm no stranger to ASUS products. I have an ASUS laptop, tablet, monitor, and other various things. The motherboard in my last gaming rig was an ASUS, and it served me well. I've gotten one lemon from them (Transformer Pad C103, which they fixed and it stopped working again later) but everything else has exceeded expectations, and their customer service has been good. I wouldn't say it's "awesome", but they were competent and willing to help when I needed it. They didn't go above and beyond, but they didn't fall short, either.
Anyway, I felt good about trying ASUS for my graphics card. My last card was a VisionTek Radeon HD 7850, and it's still doing duty in my HTPC. It has gotten a bit long in the tooth to handle newer games, though. I switched over to Nvidia because I don't have any brand-loyalty in the Nvidia-vs-AMD war (whichever works for me is all I care about) and because, again, I have a small Dell case. Most of the R9 390 offerings were huge, and they all run hotter and draw way more power than the GeForce equivalent.
Yes, I'm aware of the 3.5 + .5 GB memory issue, but I'm using this for 1080p gaming, so I'm unlikely to run into that. Yes, I'm aware that R9 is a newer product and has been showing its teeth in benchmarks, but I also know that Nvidia's GameWorks, HairWorks, Physx and other technologies are present in most of the games I care about, and that the Radeon cards have been choking on those features despite being faster cards all around. What I saw was that in the comparison between the two, it really was "six of one, half-dozen of the other" and I decided to go with the card that had lower TDP, cooler operation, and more support in more of the games I play. Another consideration was that I will be using the card for video editing, encoding, and a use for Cuda processing.
So I went for the ASUS STRIX. It is truly silent when idle. The fans don't spin (or spin very slowly) and the PC stays nice and quiet. When it gets going in an intense game, the fans spin up but they're still not as loud as my old HD 7850 was all the time. The case also stays very cool, considering the Ultra graphics I'm cranking out.
The fit was exceptionally tight in my case. Honestly, I had to cut out my hard drive cage to make this fit, and I had to go with angled SATA connectors because this card goes right over my motherboard's SATA ports. Still, I got it in there, so if you're a Dell Inspiron i3847 owner, just know you CAN get one of these puppies in your case and onto you motherboard if you're willing to void your warranty and do a little modifying to the stock case and parts. You should also know you'll need a better power supply (the Inspiron comes with a weak little 300 watt thing). I have a Corsair RM550 in mine, and it handles this load with plenty of overhead.
The STRIX uses an 8-pin connector instead of two six-pin connectors for power. That means it doesn't user-overclock as much as the competition, but that's okay... It comes out of the box already factory overclocked more than much of the competition. You still have a little room to maneuver if you want to OC, but frankly, I haven't needed to yet. This thing gobbles up everything I throw at it.
I did get some framerates dropping below 40 on Arkham Origins when I maxed out everything and set it to 2715x1527 resolution, but dropping the resolution back down to 1080p made everything jump up significantly. 60+ was doable at that setting.
Skyrim runs like a dream on this, and that's with ultra high resolution, texture mods galore, full ultra settings, and ENB applied. I'm happy.
All in all, I'm glad I jumped for the ASUS STRIX. It's a good version of the GTX 970. You'll be happy with it if you're looking to play some new games at 1080p while keeping your system cool and quiet.
