The Samsung UBD-K8500 works great with nearly no issues and many nice features. One feature that I really like is that it will remember where I left off with any Disc (movie or TV season); usually this would be specific to the disc but this blu ray player must have memory that records that data. My previous blu ray player didn't do that and it makes all the difference. This blu ray player also starts up/turns on and loads a disc very quickly. I will commonly watch a TV series on DVD for short periods of time and it will turn on, load and resume playback from where it left very quickly. The WiFi capabilities of this blu ray player are incredible, better than my webOS 3.0 smart TV (LG 65UH9500). When streaming Netflix my webOS 3.0 TV often lags and downgrades the resolution so low that it's a near blur such as 360P, but with this blu ray player it works perfectly and at the highest resolution.
This blu ray player is also is able to read blu rays that my previous blu ray player (Sony BDP-S590) greatly struggled to play for whatever reason. One such movie was Xmen 2 which is a standard blu ray. This Samsung blu ray player had no issue at all which I'm grateful for and look forward to playback issues being a thing of the past.
One of the downsides is the remote, there is no separate buttons for fast forward and rewind/reverse, instead you use the scene skip buttons and hold them down to fast forward or rewind/reverse which will frequently cause you to skip a scene ahead or behind. The stop button is right above the fast forward/scene skip button which in the dark it's easy to accidentally hit that button by mistake. These drawbacks become annoying quickly.
The Samsung player is a 7.1 channel Dolby True HD/DTS-HD Master Audio player that responds to the Sony remote controller. The picture quality and sound is the best I've yet seen and heard, much better than streaming 4K from my ROKU (my previous rockstar device), Sony FMPX10 4K Ultra HD Media Player (awful), or Ethernet wired directly from Cablevision router to Amazon, VUDU and Netflix. Streaming requires a lower compressed bitrate to get through the pipe, The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray is pure uncompressed audio and video and the results are extraordinary. I have had quality issues in the past with Samsung flat panel 1080Ps, but Samsung has restored my respect and redeemed themselves with this device.
Blacks and color are silky smooth. Every pixel seems more optimized with the Sony Triluminos display. Sony's, Triluminos technology enables TVs to display colors that exist in the real world that ordinary TVs can't display, showing subtle nuances with higher fidelity. Sony's, Triluminos technology put together with the UBD-K8500 Samsung player is showing a much broader color space, with a much wider gamut than any other device I've used. The Samsung player is why 4K was invented. Highly recommended.
I have a 2014 UH8500 and when I connected the UBD-K8500 and put in a UHD Blu-ray disc it would display a message saying that my display device did not support HDCP 2.2 and so the output would be DOWN SCALED to HD for display. Obviously, I was very disappointed and upset by this.
Enter the Samsung Evolution SEK-3500. It is a "One-Connect" box for select model 2014 and 2013 Samsung UHD TVs, including mine, but is hard to find. What it basically does is provide new "brains" and "connectivity" to your UHD TV, including the HDCP 2.2 needed by the UBD-K8500 UHD Blu-ray player.
Now that I have the SEK-3500 connected between my TV and the UBD-K8500, all is well and I can watch the UHD Blu-ray discs on my 2014 Samsung UHD TV.
Overall I'm happy with my UBD-K8500 (now that I have the SEK-3500). It is pretty much a no-frills UHD Blu-ray player, but it works (with some issues).
The Positives:
1) Good picture quality! When watching UHD Blu-ray discs there is a noticeable improvement over Blu-ray discs for most titles. One nice thing about UHD titles is that there isn't the "upscaling effect" (sort of a blur around objects moving across a background).
2) Fast disc load time! The UHD Blu-ray discs generally take 20 to 40 seconds to load. My first couple of Blu-ray players took two to three times that long to load Blu-ray discs.
3) Usually remembers where it was when playback was interrupted (unless the player crashes, in which case you start from scratch).
4) Nice, easy to read menus.
5) Runs cool.
The Con's.
1) Most Blu-ray players have some sort of display that tells you the disc is loading, or stopped, or at HH:MM:SS in the program, or is in a certain chapter, etc. This player does not. It has a tiny little red dot of a light and a tiny little blue dot of a light and that's it. It REALLY needs a display.
2) It has a very, very basic onscreen display ("Info" display) during playback. I have Blu-ray players of various makes, models, and all of them display more information about playback that the UBD-K8500 does. Some of the displays that are missing are: (a) disc type - UHD / BD / DVD; (b) audio bitrate and codec; (c) video bitrate and codec information; (d) progress in chapter (how many minutes, seconds into the current chapter, or minutes and seconds remaining in current chapter).
3) Fast Forward and Fast Reverse are in 1X increments - no 1X, 2X, 4X, 8X, 16X, 32X - you have 1X, 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X, 6X, 7X.
4) Slow response to Pause or Play from Fast Forward and Fast Reverse. A several year old INSIGNIA Blu-ray player responds faster when trying to back or skip over material than the UBD-8500 does.
5) If it has trouble reading a UHD Blu-ray disc, it is likely to crash. This happens a lot! It happens so frequently that I keep checking for software updates. Unfortunately, my UBD-K8500 is apparently on the latest software release. My current solution is to plug it into a power strip of its own so that I can easily flip the power switch on the power strip to "unplug it" when it crashes, wait 30 seconds, then power it back up.
6) When it crashes there doesn't seem to be any WORKING way of rebooting it from the front panel. Thus, unplugging it or putting it on its own power strip (and thus have its power controlled by an external switch) is the only "reboot" option available.
7) Your HD TV MUST support HDCP 2.2 on a HDMI 2.0 port in order for you to watch UHD Blu-ray discs at full 3840x2160 resolution.
8) An older Blu-ray player I had allowed you to browse your home computer network for SMB (Windows File Sharing and Linux file sharing) available Video, Picture, and Music files. Like so many newer players, this player can only browse "Media Servers", which have serious issues if you have a lot of content on your network.
A couple of things I haven't tested with it are:
A) Playback of UHD content from USB drives. It has a front-panel USB port that appears to be a USB 3.0 port, but I haven't used it. I need to test the USB port with some thumb drives and external hard drives containing UHD content.
B) Playback of UHD content from DATA Blu-ray writable discs. I have many terabytes of UHD content recorded using a Sony AX-100 camcorder, and while most of the time I put the content on USB 3.0 drives, for files under 24 GB (like short "Best Of" summaries) I burn them to DATA Blu-ray discs. I haven't tried reading any of those discs (which work well in computers) with the UBD-K8500.
Despite all the issues I've mentioned, I like this player - it just could be so much better, and maybe the second generation model will be. As it stands I give it about 3.6 stars, and round up to 4 stars.

Note: One has to make sure to have the proper settings applied. Also requires a good 18GHrtz HDMI cable.
