Nice product - but won't fit everywhere without some effort

Nice product - but won't fit everywhere without some effort
Seems to work as expected and I love the minimalist design. Just wicked expensive at nearly $55 - I feel like a HA addict buying these despite the pricing. But, it worked for me where the Jasco / GE Hinge Pin Sensor wasn't sensitive enough to tell if the door was latched or just slightly ajar.Pairing with SmartThings took a couple of tries but it worked eventually and it wasn't the trickiest device I've paired so I see that as just the price for the compactness of the device. I had read several reviews concerning battery life and just as an FYI, Sensative now has a free extended warranty (3-year) on the battery for units purchased after May 1, 2018. Not sure why those units after May 1 but the details are on their website. One point to keep in mind is that the 3.5mm required is not much but it may be more than you think - or have. Around doors I found that it was a bit tough to fit in the jamb as suggested. I have all kerf weatherstripped doors, which is pretty much what you find today if you buy a prehung wood or fiberglass door, but I suspect the same would be the case for any door or weatherstripping. I found that I had about 1/8" or so gap around the top or latch side of the door which is just about the same as the minimum required 3.5mm (3.2mm = 1/8"). Plus you don't really want it rubbing the metal magnet, or for that matter in the way if you get some seasonal door or frame expansion, so you need probably more like 4mm or so. Bottom line was that I didn't have 4mm so I ended up mortising the frame and "embedding" the strip in the frame while sticking the magnet on the door. Not exactly what I wanted to do but it's out of the way and it fits.My suggestion is that you measure the gap and look for somewhere on the order of 5/32" or 3/16" if you don't want to mortise the strip or the magnet in. If you were wondering, having a big gap isn't an issue as I found that i could raise the magnet at least 1/2" - 3/4" away from the strip before it lost contact. Also, you have about double the width of the magnet from the end of the strip where it will see the magnet. The key was just that the magnet needs to be directly over the strip when the door is in the closed position.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beauty Restored!

When I first set up my smart home, the only sensors I could find were the clunky white ones that stick out like a sore thumb. This sensor is exactly what I had been wanting! It works great so I wanted to share my experience.

The packaging feels significant. It is thicker cardboard and comes with very well written instructions. There were two magnets on the back and no buttons... so I figured I would read the directions before setting it up. To get it in to pairing mode, you just remove the two magnets that are taped to the sensor and it automatically goes in to pairing mode. I have never used another device that worked this way and it worked well! There is a tiny LED light on the front of the sensor, in the middle of the star looking symbol, that is used as an indicator.

I ended up installing the sensor bar on the top of my door with the tiny square magnet stuck on the trim. I am so happy I don't have a big white box sticking off the front door and trim anymore and my wife is happy now, so... happy life. The sensor is now invisible to me and my guests and I'm really happy about that!

I use this sensor several different ways with my Smartthings hub. This sensor will automatically turn on my lights over my front door when it is opened, I can also arm my Smartthings alarm so if this sensor is opened while I'm gone it activated a siren, turns on every light in my house and alerts my phone.

As far as the installation instructions, they were very detailed and encouraged very careful planning because the sensor components are pretty small and require pretty exact placement. I am not a careful planner, so I kind of winged it and tested it and it worked great for me! Line up the star symbol on the metal magnet with the star on the front of the sensor bar so it properly detects open/closed status. The magnet must be within 10mm for this sensor to work. The overall height of the sensor is about two credit cards stacked on top of each other, so check that you have enough clearance on your door! Here are the exact dimension of the product: 7.7"L x 0.6"W x 0.12"H magnet: 1.2"L x 0.43"W x 0.04"H

If you need an invisible sensor on your door or window, this is the one to get! I'm very happy with it! check out the before and after pictures!

2.0 out of 5 stars Great device - using it on a fence gate
Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2018
I bought this device to use on a patio gate. It seemed like a perfect fit for my application. Z-Wave, weatherproof, 10-yr battery, thin. I had no trouble including it in my VeraPlus Z-Wave network. I programmed the action (turn on a light) and it worked as expected. After attaching it to the fence/gate, it stopped working. It only took a few minutes to find the reason. The installation sheet (but nothing in the Amazon page) said not to install it on a "metal structure". My fence is aluminum. After a little delay caused by a misconfigured email server, they got back to me with several recommendations on how to make it work. In essence, I just need to put several millimeters between the device and the metal fence. They suggested a thicker adhesive and perhaps a 1/4" nylon standoff.
