The second frustrating aspect was adjusting the swivel tension on the mount. When we had hung the projector there was very little tension so the projector hung at an angle and would not stay on screen. It turns out there is a nut that can be tightened with an Allen wrench that will fix this. However, that wrench is larger than the one provided for everything else and was not included in my kit. This nut is not easy to get to but we managed to turn it with a couple of pliers.
I would have rated this 5 stars if it wasn't for the required fiddling to get it working properly. It feels secure so if you are looking for an inexpensive mount and don't mind tinkering the his will work for you.
I had bought this Monoprice projector mount at some point in the distant past thinking it looked like a sturdier, higher quality mount than the first one I bought, but never got around to using it and it sat new in its box in my basement until this week, when my old projector died and I discovered it would cost more to repair than a newer, better one would cost to replace it. So I pulled out this mount to use with my new Epson Home Cinema 2100 1080p projector and three frustrated hours later was acutely reminded of why I hate Monoprice's non-cable products.
DESCRIPTION:
This mount features the option of using one of two extension tubes that are about 3" in length and about 6" in length. I used the shorter extension tube to have the projector mount closer to the ceiling to be out of the way for family members to display exercise videos while exercising in front of the screen without getting in the way of the display. The mount has three curved arms that mount to the ceiling mount holes on the bottom of the projector (some projectors have four mount holes, but i guess you just have to use the two forward ones and one rear one with this mount), and the arms mount in long, curved grooves on the baseplate of the mount.
PROS:
- It looks like a pretty nice quality mount, simple, with smooth lines and without a lot of exposed screws, nuts, and bolts.
- Quite adjustable. Between the arms swinging over a pretty wide arc, and the base of that arc being quite adaptable in the curved arm grooves on the baseplate, this should be able to fit the mount holes of pretty much every home theater projector from the past decade or so.
- It came with several extra bolts and washers, in case one falls and gets lost while installing.
- Theoretically allows one to hide cables in t,he extension tubes, but the cut-out openings are pretty small and would probably require passing the HDMI cable through before snapping on both ends of the tube into the top and bottom portions of the mount, as I think most HDMI cable ends would be bigger than the openings in the tube.
CONS:
- Overall extremely difficult, if not impossible, to re-adjust properly and have the projector level and centered for your screen if it is not perfect out of the box. There are multiple reasons for this, below.
- First, the installation directions are altogether inadequate. They do not mention how the projector is to be adjusted for tilt forward, backward, left or right, nor do they even mention such adjustments are possible.
- Second, the design of the projector has a severe flaw with regard to its adjustability. The adjustments for tilt and for rotation/swivel on both the ceiling and and the projector end of this mount are done with a fairly short vertical bolt with an Allen/hex socket on the bottom/exterior (fits the included larger Allen wrench) and on the other end of the bolt there is a hard-to-reach hex nut tucked into the center of the part. It looked as if the two screws on the side of this piece that compress and snap into the matching holes in the extension tubes would not be parallel to the screen, so I loosened the short vertical bolt to rotate that portion of the mount and discovered that it not only rotates, but tilts, kind of a ball-mount like tilting mechanism, but using only about one third of a sphere instead of a whole sphere. Once that vertical adjustment screw is loosened, it is extremely difficult, if not impossible to get it back into a neutral, level position.
- Third, the design is further defective because there is no way to tighten the tilt-adjustment ball mechanism once the ceiling portion and the projector portion of the mount are connected via the extension tube, as the Allen-socket ends are flush or near-flush against the ceiling and projector, and the hex-nut end of the bolt is behind and completely covered by the extension tube.
- Finally, there is a defect with the materials used that makes it next to impossible to adjust the projector's tilt properly once installed if it is not level. If the ball-joint moves reasonably easily, it is too loose to hold the weight of the projector and will sag down. If it the ball joint is tight enough to hold and not sag, it cannot be adjusted to the correct position because the arms and baseplate are made from cheap metal that is too thin, and the arms and/or baseplate will start to bend if you try to tilt the projector, while in the installed mount, to a level position.
- The included hardware is of low quality. The heads of the anchoring screws are of too soft of metal and will start to strip the metal out of the Phillips head cross unless you don't put much pressure on the screw with your screwdriver or driver drill (i.e. you need to pre-drill any studs you are directly sinking these screws into with a bigger drill bit than you typically would, which means the screw won't hold as securely). Additionally, the drywall anchors are cheap, and if you cannot sink the anchor screws into a solid beam or stud on the ceiling, you'd be pretty foolish to risk your projector worth many hundreds or thousands of dollars on those cheap and non-sturdy looking drywall anchors. I would definitely get something from the local hardware store much sturdier with a high maximum load of around 60-80lbs, even though most home theater projectors weigh something in the 7-10lb range.
CONCLUSION:
After over three frustrating, curse-filled hours of trying to get my projector installed properly, I'm going to replace this piece of garbage mount, as despite taking down the projector and trying to start from scratch and re-adjust the tilt mechanism four times to get it more level, I have been unsuccessful each time and now I have a display that is crooked and too high, leaving the bottom of the screen empty and the image leaking a few inches above the frame of my screen. Maybe, if I had never attempted to loosen the short vertical adjustment bolt and installed it as it came, straight out of the box, it might have worked (my Epson has a greater range of image shift adjustments than most sub-$1500 projectors so maybe I could have filled the screen properly with just the image adjustments in the projector itself). I'm no novice when it comes to home theater projectors and their installation - this Epson is my fourth projector I've installed using three mounts, but I simply cannot recommend this mount as it is poorly designed and features inadequate quality materials.
I do like the quick release system for mounting and dismounting.
