I am a collector of vintage typewriters. I tried the bluetooth typewriter keyboard adapters, but they are clunky and the carriage return doesn't work well. I love the feel of an old typewriter and this keyboard is the best compromise. I've had it for a few months now with no problems. I would like the annoying lights to default to off, but a few clicks turns them off. The look and feel of this keyboard is fantastic. It is heavy and substantial. It would be great if it was bluetooth, but the usb cable works for me now. The braided black cloth usb cable is like a vintage phone cord. Way too long for what I need, but that's OK.
This keyboard is the best compromise for an old style typewriter. Please don't throw out the clear cover that is in the packaging. It is the best dust cover ever. It fits perfectly over the keyboard and is so invisible that sometimes I sit down to type and forget it's on and my fingers are clicking on clear plastic. By the way, this keyboard looks amazing. Yes, I would call it steampunk. When I ordered it I thought I was paying too much, but now I realize it is a bargain. How did I live without it? How much would you pay for something that just makes your life more pleasurable, bringing you back to a simpler time? I could go on, because this keyboard makes me want to keep typing. If you're on the fence, and love old typewriters, just do it.
Update One Year Later:
December 2018 - I've had this keyboard for one year now. It is still going strong. I still have no use for the lights, but, whatever. I just don't understand why anyone would want lights that dance around the keys. (FN - Down Arrow to turn them off) The muted "clacking" of the keyboard is great and I found that I can type in the middle of the night without disturbing anyone else in the house, which you can't do with a real typewriter. It is truly plug and play, on any Mac or Windows laptop with a USB plug. I use the clear plastic dust cover and after a year, this keyboard looks like new. I noticed the new 2018 version is cheaper and has four extra pop-in keys. Hey - why didn't I get those? Not sure what they are, but if KrBn is listening, I would sure appreciate them sending me the extra keys since I am an early adopter and continuing advocate of this wonderful keyboard.
Remember on an old typewriter if you made a mistake, you would backspace and get out the round brush eraser and correct it? Now with any modern keyboard, you just backspace and start typing again. Somehow, with this keyboard the clicks and clacks when backspacing just makes it feel like correcting on an old typewriter.
I am currently attempting to write a novel, and I work on it on whatever laptop I have available at the time, but I don't feel like I'm really writing unless I am using this keyboard. That's the part of this experience that is hard to write down in a review.
The LEDs under the keys can be pretty bright on the default setting, but you can adjust the brightness to your liking, or turn it off completely. Note that the LEDs simply light the base under the keys, and don't shine through the keys and illuminate the characters themselves, so in very low light conditions, the letters and numbers might still be a little hard to see.
The metal base of the keyboard is solid and gives it some durability. The feel of the keys takes a little getting used to, but I'm a touch typer and didn't have any trouble acclimating to it in a matter of minutes.
The USB cable feels sturdy and has a nice fabric wrap on it. Should hold up well.
Overall, I think it's a nice device that adds a little character to my desk.
Sadly, that's where the excitement ends. First, and most importantly, they keys are far too close together. I found myself fumbling and hitting neighbor keys with almost every keystroke. I had coworkers sit down to give it a test, and they too found their typing skills reduced significantly. As such, it makes this keyboard useless. Which is really sad. The actual feel of the keys is amazing. The weight of the keyboard is perfect. But since it would literally take retraining of years of muscle memory to use this keyboard, and potentially ruining my ability to use any other keyboard effectively, I cannot use, nor recommend this keyboard.
On a side note, the backlights are also so poorly placed that unless you are looking directly down at the keyboard, they blind you and cause such glare over the keys that they make it impossible to see any of the keys. Since I do not position my head directly above my keyboard, this is a big problem as well.
Then - out of the blue - all the keys on the left hand side (shift, caps, tab, etc) stopped behaving as they should and started creating their own character strings. I contacted KrBn support - and they suggested I press esc-fn-cntl to reset the keyboard, figuring I had gone into some gaming mode where macros were set (this keyboard is optimized for gaming in several different ways). I did the resets, but to no avail.
There's no help on the internet anywhere for this, and KrBn support stopped replying to me.
All I can say is to stay away. It appears to me to have an internal electrical fault that may occur in some instances - and cannot be fixed by KrBn.
There are other keyboards with this styling (clearly, one vendor has copied another) - and I suggest that you seriously consider one of those before you purchase this one, which apparently cannot be fixed once it breaks.
STAY AWAY.
