I'm a 69 yo male that wants to keep my house immaculate. I have used this Dyson for over a year and hate it more than ever. It replaced a Kenmore that was excellent for 26 years! First the good : extendable wand, suitable suction, doesn't get stuck around corners. That's it. Here's the rest of horrid story: After you spend 4 hours cleaning your house for the arrival of important guests you can easily detach the "bagless container" of filth which will promptly POP OPEN and dump the contents on the white carpets. That's right ...with all their great technology and engineering, the whole mess is contingent on a tiny, flimsy plastic clip. Totally absurd... not a single occurrence but 5 times this year. I guess i finally learned to carry this bomb with two hands outside. And don't think just because there is no filter to clean that when this thing dumps it is completely empty. Even when you go outside for this pageant dirt is flying in your face as you try to get the thing cleaned out. Ultimately buy a small brush to get it clean. The tiny stainless steel pores clog with hair for you to try pick out. The hose is flimsy, the carpet brush is air powered ..so reduced suction means no brushing. I sincerely regret this expensive headache of a purchase.Update : not quite 3 year after purchase and my level of disgust for this thing is over the top. Some might say if it is that bad why do you keep it ... and then you look at the purchase price and the fact that no one would even buy it for pennies on the dollar at a garage sale. I am on a fixed income and divorced my wife after 38 years so that I would be able to spend the end years of my life in a clean house. This piece of equipment is a total failure on so many engineering levels. The point is... to replace parts that are now broken and worn is beyond cost prohibitive. I am determined to keep this junk as a science experiment just to see how long before the motor burns out....god knows it doesn't clean anything properly anymore.

This replaced my older Dyson canister vacuum, which was working as well as when I bought it. I wanted the ball version, not because I have pets or a staircase, but because it's easier to manipulate and it has a much-improved manner of disposing of the canister contents. Boy, does this vacuum do a good job without a lot of effort on my part! I do have to empty the canister fairly often, which is a slight nuisance, but I'll live with it. Also, it is noisy, so be prepared for that. A favorite, small attachment picks up hair from carpeting and avoids your having to stop the machine (and unplug it!!!) to remove strands of hair clogging the rollers. (I don't remember whether I bought this separately – however, it's worth it.) This attachment does not clean quite as thoroughly as the rollers alone, but it is enormously useful. To my delight, the wand really extends. Lots of great engineering. Before I committed to buying this version, I took a look at several YouTube reviews and got a good feeling for it.

My Beam 20 year old central vac quit, so I tried finding a repairman. When I did, just the service calls and cleaning parts would have cost more than this. So I ordered. Know that my experience with central vacs may influence my working with a canister vac.
Pros: good suction, easy to move and carry upstairs, easy to empty, convenient tools, flexible connections to get into small spaces, quieter than I expected
Cons: cord just a bit short, small capacity, some tools need adapters to connect, small cleaning path with carpet tool, tools seem too lightweight.

I am happy so far, but I doubt this will last as long as my central vac. But for right now I think I made the right choice.

This vacuum has great suction, no question, because of that alone it gets 1 star. Dyson has a ton of Roller Ball competition now and they're not much better than the rest, just a lot more expensive.
During my vacuuming I get too irritated by:
1. The short power cord. No outlets in my hallways, this vacuum won't reach down the hall or the staircase from the bedroom thanks to the too short power cord. Not convenient for a two story home.
2. The attachments can't be stored with the vacuum. Rather surprised that at this price point a rack for the hose and all the attachments wasn't included.
3. The carpet attachment is only air driven. The beater bar helps lift surface fuzz, fibers and hair into the hose but its too soft, and raised too high, to move carpet fibers around.
4. It feels cheap. I know this is silly but its an expensive machine and it feels plasticy cheap. A few small changes would have made all the difference, like make the wand extend from the top rather than the floor.
5. I'm over the whole "bagless" vacuum.I hate that dust flies everywhere and I have to stick something up in the canister to hanger-ons out. There's dirt everywhere and the entire vacuum seems gross. I miss opening the machine, grabbing the bag, throwing it out, and having a clean vacuum with a new clean bag.
6. THE WORST: Everytime I go to empty the dirt canister by pressing the red "release" button to free the canister from the vacuum, the bottom opens up and spills the contents all over the floor. I have to get my other vacuum to clean it up. It's a very small plastic "hook" that does a poor job of holding the contents of the dirt in the canister. SO IRRITATING! To the point I'm ready to trash this whole thing and never buy another overpriced Dyson again!!!
They make a big deal out of "It's self righting" but maybe it shouldn't tip over so easily in the first place.

Updated May 3, 2017:
The potential mechanical issue never materialized, so that's good. The cord rewind is working correctly and hasn't had any issues. There must have been a short break-in period or it was just a temporary fluke. Will update this if I see any change. After owning for a good while with both hardwoods and carpet, I really like this vacuum.

I purchased this vacuum recently so I can only give first impressions at this time, but will update later.

Updated September 27, 2016:
Pros:
• Relatively quiet compared to even battery powered stick vacuums, but certainly compared to other powerful uprights and canisters.
• New dust bin 2-step emptying mechanism works very well. The internals of the bin automatically push the dirt and dust bunnies out of the canister and into the trash can so you don't have to stick your hands in there (which is nice compared to other models). It also exposes an internal high quality metal mesh that acts as a final boundary for dirt before the air is ejected through the vacuum into your house. This means that you can easily wipe it with a damp cloth if you feel the need to make it look cleaner (I say "look cleaner" because it's not necessary and, of course, won't cause the vacuum to lose suction if you don't clean it).
• Suction is top class.
• Never-topple design works as advertised.
• Working well on both hardwood and carpet.

Cons:
• Price
• I noticed the power cord, which is stored internally and rewinds automatically when you press a lever on the main body of the vacuum, slowly rewinding without pressing the rewind lever. I'm not sure yet if this is because the unit is new, or if the rewind lever mechanism is faulty. It would severely impact user experience if the cord improperly rewinds while you are using the vacuum (because you would have to stop vacuuming and re-pull out the power cord). I will watch this closely and update the review shortly.

So far the cost/benefit of this vacuum seems well worth it. I recommend this vacuum and will update this review after a few weeks.
