Amazon’s answer to Chromecast is called Fling, and it’s available now

Amazon wants Fire TV to replace your Chromecast. At least, that’s the message it’s sending with the new Amazon Fling SDK, a tool that lets developers build second screen and Cast-like functionality into their Android and iOS apps.

The Fling SDK isn’t doing anything revolutionary — it merely simplifies the “network discovery and communication technologies” around Fire TV, in the words of an Amazon release — but with it, the online retailer is aiming to broaden support for its burgeoning TV platform. Though the Fire TV supports DIAL, which is the “casting” standard in use by YouTube, Netflix, and other streaming apps, native casting capabilities have long been locked to the company’s own Kindle Fire devices. The public release of the SDK, said Amazon, allows developers to focus on “building new and unique user experiences.”

To jumpstart adoption of the Fling SDK, Amazon gave a select few developers access ahead of launch. Two rather self-explanatory apps, Karaoke Party and Rivet Radio, leverage the Fire TV in different ways: Karaoke Party flings song lyrics and music videos to TV, while Rivet Radio pipes audio from a paired phone. From a user perspective, “flinging” on either of these is pretty simple: you open the Fling-compatible app and touch the Amazon Fling icon. It’s basically like Chromecast.

The new Fling SDK and documentation is available from Amazon’s developer website.

Amazon may be trying to match the casting experience of Google’s ever-popular dongle, but it’s got its work cut out for it. At the search giant’s developer conference in June, Google announced new casting APIs that let developers add music and videos to cues, create multi-device game sessions, and display HUD elements on TV. And despite several Fire TV price reductions, the Chromecast still undercuts Amazon’s cheapest set-top devices by a handful of dollars.

Amazon’s God of War show is going back to the drawing board
Kratos yells in God of War Ragnarök.

Of all of the many video game adaptations that are in the works right now in Hollywood, few carry quite as much promise as Amazon's God of War TV series. The original God of War games — particularly the franchise's 2018 and 2022 installments — already boast a cinematic quality that should make them easier to adapt for the big or small screen than most video games. Despite that fact, Amazon has made little progress on its God of War adaptation in the two years since it greenlit it with a series order.

As a matter of fact, the project has just taken a major step backward. Deadline reports that original God of War showrunner Rafe Judkins, as well as fellow executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, have all parted ways with the project. This development comes even after the trio completed multiple scripts for the show's intended first season and after Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios' shared a desire to take the series in a new creative direction.

Amazon simplifies its lineup with the new Fire TV Stick HD
A promo image of the Amazon Fire TV Stick HD.

It's a little hard to believe we've gone through most of 2024 without a new Amazon Fire TV Stick. That is, until now. The Fire TV Stick HD has been announced, with the $35 device reducing the Fire TV Stick lineup from four to three and in the process replacing the two oldest sticks in the family. The $40 Fire TV Stick and the $30 Fire TV Stick Lite will still be around while they're in stock. But after that, they're gone.

The other two current devices remain the second-generation Fire TV Stick 4K, and the second-gen Fire TV Stick 4K Max, which we still consider to be the best Fire TV Stick to get.
