Bang and Olufsen’s Beolit 20 sticks a wireless charger into a wireless speaker

Portable Bluetooth speakers are the ultimate in convenience when you want sound on-the-go, and Bang and Olufsen’s (B&O) $500 Beolit 20 makes that experience even more convenient, thanks to a flat top surface that has a built-in Qi wireless charger.

Available starting today at select retailers and the B&O website, the Beolit 20 is the latest iteration of the company’s portable Bluetooth speaker. Outwardly, it looks identical to the previous version, the Beolit 17, right down to its boxy shape and rounded bottom corners — plus leather carry strap — which make for a vaguely retro-inspired look, evoking vintage portable radios like this Dynatron TP11 “Nomad” from the 60s.

But the real selling point for the Beolit 20 is its built-in wireless charger. Whether it’s an iPhone, Samsung Galaxy phone, or a set of true wireless earbuds, just drop your device onto the Beolit’s top surface and sit back while the internal battery gives it a boost.

Speaking of the battery, B&O claims that it has coaxed a 30% improvement in play time when compared to the Beolit 17, which had a 24-hour capacity. Some quick math suggests the Beolit 20 is now good for about 31 hours.

Inside, a 5.5-inch woofer sits alongside three 1.5-inch full ranges drivers and two 4-inch passive bass radiators. B&O doesn’t provide a power rating for the amplifiers but does note that the speaker can deliver 77dB of bass and 93dB of mid-range loudness. It’s likely that this model uses the same dual 35-watt Class D amplifiers as the Beolit 17. That volume is dispersed in a 360-degree pattern which should mean that you can place the Beolit 20 almost anywhere and get room-filling sound.

Stereo pairing is also supported. You can pair any two Beolit 20s, or, if you happen to own an older Beolit 17, you can pair with that speaker too.

The speaker charges via a small USB-C port and there’s also a 3.5mm input jack for those rare occasions when Bluetooth just won’t cut it for your old-school audio sources.

The Beolit 20 is available in Grey Mist and Black Anthracite colors.

Sonos Move 2: Sonos’ biggest portable speaker gets a big update
Sonos Move 2 in olive.

Sonos has unveiled the latest version of its Move portable smart speaker -- the Move 2. It looks nearly identical to the original Sonos Move, yet contains several updates that bring it in line with the company's recently released Era 100 and Era 300 speakers. The Move 2 has been priced at $449, a $50 increase over the previous model, and will be available starting September 20, 2023, in a wide selection of countries. The Move 2 replaces the first-gen speaker, though Sonos will continue to sell the original Move while inventory remains, so you may want to keep an eye open for some deep discounts.

At a distance, you can't tell the Move and Move 2 apart, well, unless the Move 2 shows up in its new color option -- olive. The Move 2 is a hair bigger, but it still weighs the same 6.61 pounds. Sonos has kept the same rubberized no-slip base as well as the integrated carry handle on the back. As with the original, the Move 2 is built for the outdoors with an IP56 rating for dust and water resistance.

JBL Authentics 500. JBL

JBL has long dominated the portable Bluetooth speaker market with its rugged and great-sounding Clip, Flip, and Charge speakers, but apart from a few smart soundbars, it has never taken a serious shot at Sonos' wireless multiroom crown. With prices that range from $330 to $700 and a huge list of Sonos-like features -- including Dolby Atmos -- it's clear that JBL is no longer content to just be the wireless speaker you take to the beach. The Authentics will be available to buy starting September 17; here's everything you need to know.

DTS Play-Fi, the wireless multiroom audio platform that can be used to set up a fully wireless home theater sound system, has expanded from its previous 5.1-channel limitation to 12 channels, which can support surround sound formats like Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, or IMAX Enhanced in up to a 7.2.4-channel configuration.

The news comes two days after the announcement of Dolby Labs' Dolby Atmos FlexConnect technology that will provide a similar level of wireless speaker flexibility for owners of compatible TVs.
