Got Truckloads of Blu-ray Discs? Sony Has MegaChangers

If you’ve accepted the Blu-ray format as your own personal high-definition savior, you’ve may have noticed it’s tough to intermingle your Blu-ray media with all your existing DVD and CD media—sure, a standalone Blu-ray player will handle all three formats, but if you want to have a massive library of content available at all times—potentially from anywhere in your home—that lone BD player isn’t going to cut it. For the true media mavens among us, then, Sony has just introduced two new Blu-ray capable MegaChangers that can handle up to 400 CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs.

“Think about all those great movie and music discs in your collection,” said Sony Electronics home audio and video business VP Chris Fawcett, in a statement. “Wouldn’t it be great to instantly play those movies or CDs—definitely gives a new meaning to the notion of a movie marathon!”

The two MegaChanger models are the BDP-CX7000ES and the BDP-CX960; both models support up to 400 discs feature Ethernet connectivity so the units can skate out to the Gracenote lookup service to grab titles along with cast, director, release, and genre information for many titles. Both units also support 7.1 channel Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Digital Plus, along with DTS-HD High Resolution Audio and DTS-HD Master Audio. At the higher end, the CX7000ES supports integration with home automation systems via RS-232 and IR connectivity; it also sports Sony’s HD “Realty Enhancer” and color enhancement technology; it’ll also upscale standard DVDs to 1080p over HDMI.

Expect to see the CX7000ES in August for about $1,900; the CX960 will ship “this fall” for about $800.
