LG SL90 Borderless HDTV

LG SL90 Gloss black bezels are out, no bezels are in.

Toshiba pioneered the naked look with the edge-to-edge design of its Regza SV670 TV, which debuted at CES. The company compared it to an infinity pool for the flush, totally uninterrupted look of the front. It wowed crowds, and LG was paying attention.

Last week, the company introduced its new SL90, which features the same type of borderless design. A single pane of glass runs from edge to edge for a clean, modern look that’s uncluttered by the typical picture-frame bezel. At only 1.15 inches thick, it looks more like a polished slab of slate on a pedestal than a television.

To slim it down to those dimensions, LG has used LED backlighting, which also reduces electricity consumption and boosts contrast to an unbelievable 3,000,000:1 ratio. A 120Hz refresh rate reduces motion blur, and the Mark-Levinson-tuned “invisible speaker system” eliminates the need for speaker grilles on the face of the TV.

LG will release both 42- and 47-inch versions of the SL90 later this year, but prices have not yet been announced. The SL80 series, which uses the same borderless design but with cheaper CCFL backlighting, will sell for $1,900 and $2,800 in those dimensions, meaning SL90 buyers can expect to drop at least two large to join the club. More details are available at LG.

LG provides pricing for the 2025 G5 and C5 OLEDs
An LG G5 OLED TV hanging on a wall in a bright living room.

Kicking off the 2025 OLED TV release schedule, LG has announced the pricing and availability for its two most popular TV series -- the premium-tier G5 and step down C5. Both TV series are historically on our best TVs list, and after seeing both of them in person last week for LG's reviewer workshop in New Jersey, we fully expect repeat performances.

The most notable improvement to LG's OLED technology is the move from a three-layer panel with MLA (micro lens array) to a four-layer panel structure. The four stack includes layers for each primary color -- one for red, one for green, and two for blue -- instead of two blue and a single red/green/yellow layer in the old design. The new G5 uses what LG calls Brightness Booster Ultimate technology with the 55-, 65-, 77-, and 83-inch versions (the 97-inch G5 uses Brightness Booster Max) which is three times brighter than the B series and 45% brighter than the G4 OLED. That increase is not only on peak brightness, but full-field white brightness as well. At the reviewer's workshop, LG lined up the G5, G4, and two top-tier competitors from last year to show off the brightness improvements on the G5, and the results were pretty remarkable.

Don’t sleep on the LG B5 in 2025
A lineup of TVs at LG's 2025 reviewer workshop.

Last week, Caleb Denison and I got the chance to spend some time at LG headquarters for closer looks at the 2025 models announced at CES in January. Sure, the majority of the excitement the past couple months has been around WOLED technology taking a pretty big step forward. The G5 is getting rid of MLA (Micro Lens Array) technology and the existing three layer structure -- consisting of a single yellow/green/red layer between two blue layers -- and instead using a four-layer stack with separate red, green, and (two) blue layers. It's right for this kind of news to get top headlines in the AV world, but after last week, I'm equally interested in the oft-forgotten LG OLED series -- the B series.
