Expiring Soon: These films will vanish from Netflix on New Year’s Day

netflix-movies-expiring-jan-2014

Compiled by a group of Reddit users, Netflix will be removing a selection of 80+ films from Netflix Instant on January 1, 2014 which include popular titles such as As Good As It Gets, Braveheart, Being John Malkovich, Desperado, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Man on the Moon, October Sky, Titanic and Top Gun. This is somewhat typical of Netflix since movies and televisions shows are added and removed as licencing deals start and expire. However, this list of films is somewhat larger than other months, specifically because the licensing deal that covered these films expires at the end of 2013.

Of course, the removal of these films doesn’t mean that Netflix won’t add the movies and television shows back to the service in the future. Netflix could add any of them back into the lineup, assuming the films are popular enough within the Netflix community and cost effective as well. However, it’s likely that the lack of interest among the community was partly a contributing factor to remove the content from the streaming service.

In addition to the films, Netflix will also remove a collection of television shows from the service. However, Netflix will be adding 70+ titles to Netflix on January 1 which includes popular titles such as American Psycho, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Raging Bull, Spaceballs and Thelma & Louise.
