SVS Prime speakers blow you away without blowing up your wallet

To my delight, high-value speakers that deliver quality sound at a price most folks can live with are getting easier and easier to come by. But then there are some speakers that blow the whole notion of “bang for your buck” wide open. Golden Ear Technology‘s speakers do that, and so do SVS’ wares — big time.

Last year we were treated to the aptly-named SVS Ultra series. Everything about them was “ultra” — ultra-beautiful finish, ultra-great sound, and ultra-big footprint. In fact, that was the series’ only real knock: the speakers were just too big for some folks. Fortunately, the SVS Prime series was developed to deliver the same kind of robust, lively sound the Ultra series delivered, but in an much less imposing package.

It’s hard to imagine a scenario in which one SVS Prime speaker or another wouldn’t be suitable. From tiny satellites (with surprisingly satisfying sound) to dangerously big-sounding bookshelf speakers, right up to a modestly-sized floorstanding model, SVS has to created a a buffet of options to satisfy nearly any kind of home theater hunger.

What makes the Prime series really special, however, is their musicality. Whether using the 3-way floorstanding speaker or the two-bookshelf speaker in a two-channel stereo music scenario, the result is a rich, invigorating presentation, with authentic vocals, plenty of detail in the upper midrange and treble, and bass that will surprise the hell out of you.

We have yet to give the center channel a thorough test drive, but if the center channel is built anything like the rest of the series, movie dialog is going to sound crystal clear and hyper realistic. Check back for our full review to learn more.

First ‘Tuned by THX’ home theater speakers need no A/V receivers — or wires

THX has become synonymous with top-notch cinema sound in commercial theaters. However, the George Lucas-founded company (now owned by gaming giant Razer) has been increasingly focused on helping consumers get a better quality of audio (and video) at home. To this end, it has created a new technical service called Tuned by THX, which gives audio companies the opportunity to have their products custom-tuned by the sound experts at THX. While it doesn't guarantee that the speakers and audio components will knock your socks off, it's THX's way of saying that it has adjusted the characteristics of these components to deliver what is (in THX's opinion) the best sound that these components are capable of.

In automotive terms, it's like taking your car to a Formula 1 mechanic for a tune-up. They won't be able to magically turn your Fiesta into a Ferrari, but they'll still be able to coax more performance out of it than it had when it left the factory. With a Tuned by THX audio component, the difference can be very noticeable.

kilpsch wisa wireless speakers now available reference lifestyle 50

When we first got a glimpse of Klipsch's new wireless reference speakers at CES 2019, we were pretty excited. Equipped with WiSA technology, these speakers can be unboxed and set up in minutes to create anything from a modest 2-channel stereo home theater sound system, up to a 7.1 bone-shaking monster. They're now finally available for purchase at Klipsch.com and select retailers like B&H Photo Video.

The speakers in question are the RW-34C center-channel speaker ($699), the RW-51M Monitors ($699/pair), and the RW-100SW ($499) wireless subwoofer. You can buy these three components for a really good 3.1 system, or double up on the RW-51M Monitors and give yourself a truly surround sound 5.1 setup.

Get ready to ditch your amplifier: New LG TVs add a powerful way to go wireless

WiSA. It's not exactly a household name, and maybe it never will be. But now that LG has announced that all of its new 2019 flagship OLED and LED TVs will be WiSA-certified, we think you're going to start hearing a lot more about this wireless audio technology.

WiSA, which stands for Wireless Speaker & Audio, is both a hardware and software specification for delivering 24-bit, 48kHz/96kHz digital audio, wirelessly, with support for up to eight channels, including Dolby Atmos, and DTS X. WiSA, as a technology, has been around since 2013, where it made its debut at CES. We were super impressed by the demo we saw, and even declared WiSA to be the future of your wireless home theater. But since then, WiSA has languished, failing to get a serious toe-hold in the home theater audio market, despite now having the substantial support of brands like Klipsch, Bang & Olufsen, and even LG itself (a division of LG helped create a WiSA USB transmitter sold by Summit Wireless)
