YouTube TV launches on PlayStation 4 consoles in the U.S.

For a lot of PS4 owners, the news that Sony’s PS Vue live TV streaming service will be shutting down at the end of this month came as a bit of a shock. With no other live TV streaming services available on the popular gaming console, it meant that subscribers would have to buy another streaming device just to get access to an alternative service. Still, as we had hoped and expected, Sony has decided to open up the PS4 to third parties: Today, YouTube TV launches on the PS4, making it the first non-Sony-owned live TV service on the platform.

With this announcement, it’s now just a matter of time before the PS4 (and PS4 Pro) become full-fledged alternatives to devices like the Apple TV, Roku, and Amazon Fire TV for folks who are looking to cut the cord in favor of live TV streaming subscriptions. So far, however, the monopoly has shifted from Sony to YouTube TV.

YouTube TV might prove to be very popular with PS Vue customers. At $50 per month for its one-price-fits-most selection of more than 70 channels, YouTube TV costs the same as the base PS Vue package, yet offers more channels. Its unlimited-capacity DVR feature will also feel like an upgrade.

On the downside, YouTube TV doesn’t offer much in the way of additional channels for those who want to really load up on entertainment options. PS Vue’s top channel package included over 90 channels and each package included the ability to add on popular services like HBO, Cinemax, and Epix for an additional monthly charge. YouTube TV has some paid add-ons, too, but they do not include these channels.

YouTube TV is also a bit stingier when it comes to the number of accounts you can associate with a single subscription and how many of those accounts can stream simultaneously. PS Vue offered 10 accounts and 5 simultaneous streams, whereas YouTube TV only offers six accounts and three streams at the same time.

PS Vue users also enjoyed an unparalleled level of control over channel playback, with pause, skip forward, and skip backward available on all of its live TV channels, something no other live TV service has offered so far.

Despite these relatively minor shortcomings, we think YouTube TV is an excellent value for the money. And while it may not please all PS Vue subscribers who find themselves looking for an alternative, we suspect it won’t be long before other choices come to the PS4 platform.

The YouTube TV on a Roku TV.

When you think of streaming video, you think YouTube. And so YouTube TV — Google's live TV streaming service — very much just makes sense for a lot of people. Designed for those who want to cut the cord and ditch their cable or satellite subscriptions (and known in the industry as a multichannel video programming distributor, or MPVD), YouTube TV competes in the same arena as other streaming television services like DirecTV Stream (formerly known as AT&T TV Now and DirecTV Now), Sling TV, FuboTV, and Hulu With Live TV.

And YouTube TV offers a unique mix of features that make it very appealing, so much so that it's now the No. 1 service in the U.S. in terms of the number of paid subscribers, with more than 8 million subscribers as of February 2024 — up more than 3 million since Google last gave an update in mid-2022. The popularity is due to several factors. YouTube TV is easy to use. It's got a selection of channels that's competitive with all its rivals. And the YouTube TV price is competitive, too. You're able to watch YouTube TV on pretty much any modern device. And the fact that parent company Alphabet (aka Google) has been marketing the heck out of it the past few years certainly hasn't hurt, either.

YouTube TV laps the competition with 8 million subscribers
YouTube TV on Apple TV.

If there ever was any doubt which live streaming service was dominating in the U.S., it ends now. YouTube TV has more than 8 million subscribers, according to a blog post penned by CEO Neal Mohan. That's up from the 5 million subscribers the service announced in July 2022.

By comparison, Hulu With Live TV — the second-biggest service — reported 4.6 million subscribers as of September 30, 2023, which marked the end of parent company Disney's fiscal year. YouTube's parent company, Google/Alphabet, doesn't report subscription numbers with any real sort of fidelity. "More than 8 million" is all we're going to get. The new numbers also mean that YouTube TV has about four times as many subscribers as the third-highest service, which is Sling TV, at just over 2 million.

YouTube TV is finally fixing the biggest problem with multiview
College basketball in multiview on YouTube TV.

The sheer size of today's latest and greatest televisions has made multiview — the feature by which you can watch multiple channels at once — a must-have feature. That's been good for services like YouTube TV, ESPN+, Fubo, and Apple TV, which have their own implementations.

Multiview has been particularly important for YouTube TV. It's the most popular live TV service in the U.S. with more than 5 million subscribers. And it just finished its first season as the new home of NFL Sunday Ticket, which by all accounts was a pretty major success.
