Amazon to Launch New Digital Book Programs

Online shopping site Amazon.com today announced plans for two new digital book programs which will enable customers to have greater flexibility in their reading choices. These programs, called Amazon Pages and Amazon Upgrade, are built upon the company’s â€œSearch Inside the Bookâ€ technology, which allows consumers to search the interior text of hundreds of thousands of books.

The Amazon Pages program, Amazon.com said, will allow customers to purchase and read online just the pages they want from a specific book. The other program, Amazon Upgrade, will allow users the option of not only purchasing the physical book to be delivered to their doorstep, but also allow for complete access to a fully digitized text version as well which can be viewed on Amazon’s website.

“Amazon Pages and Amazon Upgrade leverage Amazon’s existing Search Inside the Book technology to give customers unusual flexibility in how they buy and read books,” said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO, Amazon.com. “In collaboration with our publishing partners, we’re working hard to make the world’s books instantly accessible anytime and anywhere.”

Google partners with ADT to launch new smart home security system

Google has partnered with ADT to bring its lineup of smart home gadgets to a new DIY home security system -- ADT Self Setup. The unique package allows you to choose from a variety of Google devices to add to your home, all of which offer full support for the new ADT+ smartphone app.

The goal of the collaboration is to offer the customer service and security of ADT with the premium products developed by Google. The ADT Self Setup system can be modified to include the Nest Cam, Nest Thermostat, Nest Mini, Nest Hub Max, Nest Doorbell, and several first-party ADT products like the ADT Motion Sensor and ADT Smart Home Hub.

Amazon Astro gets new pet- and security-focused features

Last year, Amazon announced its new home robot Astro. Astro combines autonomous navigation, intelligent motion, Alexa, and a cheery personality all into one device. Thus far, you could use it to help patrol and secure your home or have it always near a loved one for communication. Today at its fall hardware event, Amazon announced new features that Astro will have to improve its intelligence.

First, Astro is no longer just for the home, but also for small and medium-sized businesses. Having Astro patrol your business after hours or while you're away is an excellent alternative to hiring a security guard. Speaking of which, Astro can now utilize Ring's Virtual Security Guard feature to keep businesses protected. For example, suppose the company is already using Ring Alarm systems, and an alarm goes off. In that case, Astro can investigate what is happening while a rapid response agent can visually observe what's happening in real time. Then, if needed, agents can take action by calling authorities or talking to intruders using Astro's cameras and two-way talk microphones.
