eBay Joins Social Networks

Think of social networks, and eBay probably won’t be the first thing that jumps into your mind. But the giant Internet auction site has begun looking at its own kind of social network, ebay Neighborhoods, contained within the large eBay umbrella.   Earlier this year it acquired Stumbleupon, a kind of neo-social network, but now it seems to have found a real, grass-roots social network fit.   Each Neighborhood is built around a shared interest, whether it be Star Wars or Coffee Lovers (with 353 current members, Coffee Lovers is currently the biggest Neighborhood).   Users are free to suggest and create new Neighborhoods, with over 600 already in existence. Those who join will have My Neighborhoods added to their My eBay page. Users can join as many Neighborhoods as they wish.   The feature was officially introduced yesterday as part of a major rethink of eBay, which has undergone few changes in the last decade. Other plans for the next few months include one-click bidding, which should make it easier for bidders during the last 15 minutes of an auction, a real time auction monitor and a streamlined checkout process.

Getting my smart home devices to switch Wi-Fi networks is annoying
Amazon Echo Show 5 (2nd Gen 2021) on table.

Let's address the two-dozen little elephants in the room: Swapping all of my smart home devices to a new Wi-Fi network should not be as annoying as it is. I recently switched to a new router, which means the SSID (network name) changed. Every smart device in my home had to be reconnected to the new network, but what I found is that there is no cohesive way to do that.

This is further exacerbated by the fact that certain devices, like the Amazon Echo, require you to press a physical button on the device as part of the change. Smart home technology is only as smart as its weakest link, and the difficulty in swapping networks is unnecessarily frustrating.
Smart home tech needs to be accessible in one place
A smart home hub should function as a central control, rather than just a way to quickly control devices. The most-used system in my home is Alexa, and I use the Alexa app to monitor and control the majority of devices throughout my home. If the device is Amazon-branded, I can change its network through the Alexa app.

Blink joins the video doorbell space with its ultra-affordable $50 offering
The Blink video doorbell expands Blinks line of smart home devices.

Blink is well known in the smart home space for its affordable indoor and outdoor cameras. Now, Blink seeks to adorn your door frame with its first video doorbell. Announced during Amazon's Fall September 2021 event, the doorbell can be installed wired or wirelessly depending on your needs. You'll get typical video doorbell features like 1080p HD video day or night, two-way audio, customizable motion detection zones, and alerts on your smartphone when your bell is pressed.

One interesting aspect of this doorbell is that it runs on two included AA lithium batteries. Wired installations can last up to two years before the batteries need to be replaced. Wireless connections will be significantly shorter depending on your environment and use, of course. Blink also recommends the use of a Sync Module 2 when running the doorbell on battery power.
