Your speaker now understands context, not just commands.

What’s happened? Google has begun an early access rollout of Gemini for Home, its upgraded voice assistant experience that replaces the older Google Assistant on compatible Nest speakers and displays. The new assistant is now available in the U.S. for those who have registered for Early Access. Google plans to release it in other countries throughout 2026.

Today, we’re starting the early access rollout of the Gemini for Home voice assistant in the U.S. You can either say “Hey Google” to your speaker or display to request specific help or answers, or talk naturally with Gemini Live by saying “Hey Google, let’s chat.” pic.twitter.com/taQj3HiYel

  • You can still say “Hey Google,” but the update brings richer natural-language understanding and follow-up conversations (so you don’t have to keep saying “Hey Google” repeatedly)
  • You can also say “Hey Google, let’s chat” to enter a follow-up-friendly dialogue, or ask your Nest Hub to “search my camera history” to find what was going on in your living room last night.

What can it do? If you own a Nest speaker, display or other compatible Google Home device, this update transforms it from a simple assistant into a smarter conversational partner; one that understands context, handles multi-step tasks, and blends device control with everyday help.

  • Gemini-powered Nest Cams and Doorbells produce detailed alerts (e.g., “Dog steps out of pen”) and let you search through video history with phrases like “Did the package arrive today?”
  • You can execute multi-step routines from phrases such as “Lock the door, turn off lights, and lower the thermostat.”

Please note that basic Gemini features will be accessible out of the box, however, advanced capabilities such as live conversation mode (Gemini Live) are locked behind a Google Home Premium subscription. Also, users who upgrade to Gemini’s early access, cannot rollback to Google Assistant.

Here are some of the prompts shared by Google to explore with Gemini for Home:

  • “Hey Google, how many lights were on today?”
  • “Show me the backyard camera feed between 9 p.m. and midnight.”
  • “Hey Google, let’s chat — help me plan a week-long road trip with kids.”
  • “OK Google, what’s the fastest way to make a heart-healthy dinner tonight?”

Why this matters? The upgrade signals a shift from purely task-based assistants to a more conversational and context-aware home helpers.

  • By integrating Gemini into smart home devices, Google is making your living room a more intelligent hub by blending information, entertainment, and control.
  • The “Let’s chat” mode makes interactions less rigid and more fluid, so you can ask follow-up questions or refine your requests without restarting the command.
  • Smart-home controls become more granular because now you can say, “turn off all lights except the living room,” or “what happened at home today?” and get meaningful summaries.

The Google Home Speaker is impressive, until you look at the power cable
Sphere, Electronics, Speaker

The Google Home Speaker hasn't even started shipping yet, but one lucky buyer managed to grab one early and share their first impressions. While most of the news is positive, there's one detail that won't sit well with anyone who cares about repairability.

For the unaware, Google announced the speaker back in October 2025, and pre-orders went live last week. Priced at $99, it's the company's first new speaker in six years, so people have plenty of questions.
