Six Apart Takes Apart Pownce

Blogging company Six Apart, makes of Movable Type, TypePad, and Vox—have announced they have acquired micro-blogging service Pownce…and will be promptly shutting it down. Pownce will be shutting down operations on December 15, 2008, and users have until then to use a new export function to get their postings out of Pownce and into services like Vox, TypePad, or WordPress.

Pownce’s Leah Culver and Mike Mallone will join Six Apart’s engineering team, with an eye towards integrating social blogging technologies and features into Six Apart’s products. Pownce’s Kevin Rose and Daniel Burka will operate as advisers to Six Apart.

“We have been impressed not only with the vision for Pownce but the great work of Leah Culver and Mike Malone and are very happy that they will be joining us,” wrote Six Apart’s Chris Alden in his company blog. “The Pownce team and Six Apart share the same passion for social blogging and we’re really proud to have them on board.

Pownce offers micro-blogging services similar to Twitter, but with the added capability of easily sharing files, links, and event invitations.

Its smaller size means it's portable enough to take with you on the go, whether you're trying to serve up drinks at a party at home or at a backyard barbecue. It doesn't take much to set up the device. Once you do, you can make more than 40 different cocktails with ease. Drinkworks uses pre-made pods to create its cocktails.

Arlo takes privacy seriously by shielding its new Essential Indoor Camera
arlo takes privacy seriously with its new indoor camera essential

Home security is a field of contradictions. On one hand, it offers you a 24/7 view into your home and provides you with peace of mind. You can keep an eye on things while you're away. On the other hand, there are potential security implications. A lens pointed at your home's interior at all times, on or not, can be unsettling. CES 2021 has focused heavily on consumer privacy, and Arlo's new Essential Indoor Camera demonstrates this in a big way.

The standout feature of the Essential Indoor Camera is that it has an easy-to-control, automated privacy shield. The camera gives users the ability to control everything about its recording. You choose when the camera monitors and records. When in disarm mode, the Essential Indoor Camera does not record or detect motion or audio, and will remain in this mode until the user deactivates the mode from within the Arlo App. You can also deactivate the privacy shield by starting a livestream.
