PG&E applies to build Tesla’s largest battery farm yet in Silicon Valley

Tesla’s largest-ever Powerpack installation may be coming to Northern California. Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) applied to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) for approval for a utility-owned 182.5 MW energy storage farm using Tesla Powerpacks at the company’s energy storage site in Moss Landing.

PG&E also sought approval for three third-party owned energy storage projects. One of the third-party projects will have a larger initial capacity than the Tesla project. The Tesla project, however, would have an expansion capacity of 1.1 GW.

The storage projects’ purpose is to help keep electrical power levels even for PG&E customers. The storage facilities would feed power to the grid when consumption exceeds normal levels and during blackouts or other service interruptions.

The three additional projects and their respective storage capacities are Dynegy Marketing and Trade, LLC, 300 MWh; Hummingbird Energy Storage, 75 MW; and Micronoc Inc., 10 MW. All four projects would use lithium-ion battery storage technology and be located in the utility’s South Bay — Moss Landing area, which services from the South Bay area to California’s central coast. The coverage area encompasses Silicon Valley.

Additional mega-energy farm utility projects

The projects will have enough storage capacity to provide power to the region’s electrical grid for four hours. If the Tesla project expands to the max, its discharge duration will increase to six hours and provide six times as much energy as the initial installation.

Tesla’s 100 MW battery farm in South Australia, switched on December 1 has already proved its value. In the first four months of service, the costs for ancillary services to fill in for power interruptions in the region decreased by a full 90 percent, according to McKinsey and Co.

PG&E is looking for improved service and reduced costs from the proposed projects.

“Energy storage plays an increasingly important role in California’s clean energy future, and while it has been a part of PG&E’s power mix for decades — starting with the Helms Pumped Storage Plant in the 1980s — recent decreases in battery prices are enabling energy storage to become a competitive alternative to traditional solutions. As a result, we believe that battery energy storage will be even more significant in enhancing overall grid reliability, integrating renewables, and helping customers save energy and money,” Roy Kuga, vice president, Grid Integration and Innovation, PG&E, said in a statement.

Dyson Corrale Straightener is $270 off for Cyber Monday 2023
Dyson Corrale

You don't get many chances to buy the Dyson Corrale hair straightener at a discount, but there's an offer available today. In one of the best Cyber Monday deals that we've come across for Dyson products, Walmart is selling the Corrale for just $180 instead of $450. However, while that's a massive $270 in savings, you should know that this is a refurbished model, though it comes with an official 12-month warranty from Dyson. That's actually a substantially bigger discount than we've found for the Dyson Airwrap, which only has a $100 discount right now.

Why you should buy the Dyson Corrale Straightener
The Dyson Corrale Straightener is a premium hair straightener that typically means you need fewer passes to get your hair straight. Unlike regular straighteners that use solid plates, this one uses flexing plates so it can shape and gather hair, providing you with enhanced styling options with less heat so it's kinder for your hair. Dyson promises half the damage, reduced frizz, and fewer flyaways when you use the straighteners.

This R2-D2 lookalike is really a smart speaker stand, and it’s $32 for Cyber Monday
A little girl looks at the Impremli Android Rus-T1 smart speaker stand on a set of shelves.

Star Wars lovers may enjoy what this Cyber Monday deal at Amazon has to offer, as it resembles one of the most popular characters in the Star Wars universe, R2-D2. And while at heart the Impremli Android Rus-T1 is a decorative knick-knack, in actuality it’s a smart speaker stand that works with a wide variety of the best smart speakers. You can currently grab the little robot for $32, which is a $23 Cyber Monday savings from its regular price of $55.

Why you should buy the Impremli Android Rus-T1 smart speaker stand
R2-D2 is one of the most beloved characters Star Wars has turned out, and while this smart speaker stand is in no way an officially licensed R2-D2 replica, it looks enough like Luke Skywalker’s sidekick for me to call it that if it were at my bedside. It has rotatable legs that allow for it to stand in different positions on tables, shelves, kitchen counters, and even around the office. It includes a set of interchangeable blue accessories, but should you want to move the representation away from R2-D2, you can purchase additional colors that are sold separately.
