If you thought you were finished hearing about Samsung and its spontaneously combusting devices, think again. It’s not just the Galaxy Note 7 that’s presenting a problem — it’s now the Galaxy S7 Edge, too. Apparently, when it rains, it’s absolutely torrential in the Samsung world.

As per a recent report from PhoneArena, yet another Galaxy S7 Edge phone has caught fire, this time while being charged with an OEM charger. The latest incident was reported by an individual who allegedly is an employee of “one of the big” U.S. carriers. As the anonymous source told PhoneArena, a customer came to the retailer just two weeks after receiving his new S7 Edge, which as luck would have it, was a replacement for the Galaxy Note 7. While charging the phone overnight using an OEM charger, the owner reported that the phone burst into flames.

Sadly, this isn’t a novel occurrence for the Galaxy S7 Edge. Last month, another smartphone user sued the Korean phone maker when his own handset caught on fire in his pocket. This left him with a series of second and third-degree burns. A similar incident took place a couple weeks ago in the Philippines, whereupon a woman claimed that her own S7 Edge caught on fire while her teenaged daughter was using it.

While three incidents certainly isn’t a good track record, it might still be a bit premature to accuse the S7 Edge of being just as faulty a the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7. Samsung hasn’t commented on the most recent burning smartphone, and we’re still waiting on a formal investigation to determine the root of the incident. And given that the S7 Edge has been around for over six months, we probably needn’t worry about a widespread case of spontaneously combusting handsets. Not yet, at least.

Samsung aped iPhone filters, but served it better on the Galaxy S25
Using filters on the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra.

With the arrival of the Galaxy S25 series, Samsung introduced a bevy of camera-centric changes. Take for example the Galaxy S25 Ultra, which upgrades to a 50-megapixel ultrawide sensor, a new Spatio Temporal filter for blur reduction, 8K capture across all lenses, default 10-bit HDR recording, and more. But the company silently gave a massive boost to filters.

So far, users have only been able to pick a filter and capture media with the effect applied on top. There was no scope for fine-tuning the filter characteristics in real time. That limitation has finally gone to the grave with the Galaxy S25 series.

The Galaxy S25 has already broken records, and it’s not even out yet
The back of the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra.

The Samsung Galaxy S25 has proven so popular already, its pre-orders in South Korea have surpassed that of the Galaxy S23 series. Samsung claims 1.31 million Galaxy S25 phones have been pre-ordered between January 24 and February 3, while the previous S-series model managed 1.21 million pre-orders during the same period.

Samsung has also revealed how the series is performing at a device level. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Galaxy S25 Ultra is the most preordered model in the range, with 52% of buyers opting for the most expensive S25 phone. The standard Galaxy S25 is in second place with 26% of the pre-orders, leaving the Galaxy S25 Plus in last place with 22% of the pre-orders.

Apple’s dominance in the global smartphone market continued well into the sunset era of 2024, but Samsung managed to make a breakthrough after a drought stretching all the way back to 2018. Counterpoint Research just released its latest Global Handset Model Sales Tracker report covering phones sold worldwide between January and November last year, showcasing Apple’s user dominance at the top despite the iPhone’s premium sticker price.

The iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 15 Pro took the top three spots in the same order. The fifth, eighth, and ninth positions were grabbed by the iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 14, and iPhone 16 Pro, respectively. The only other premium phone in the list came from Samsung, marking a crucial milestone for the company’s flagship Galaxy S line.
