Google Play Store offers big movie and game discounts for Thanksgiving

As families get together for Thanksgiving weekend, and the kids are off school, it can be tricky to keep everyone entertained. Luckily, Google is ready to step in and help with some discounted entertainment. The Google Play Store is running a special Cyber Week event in honor of the deals bonanza that is Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Why not settle down with the whole family and watch a movie after the turkey and trimmings? You can rent any movie from the Play Store on Thanksgiving day for just 99 cents. Running all week, there are also some pretty deep discounts on popular TV shows like Game of Thrones or American Horror Story for when the kids have gone to bed. You’ll find deals on family-friendly movies like Mamma Mia 2 and Teen Titans Go! to the Movies, too.

If you’re more of a gamer, then you’ll be excited to see up to 80 percent off top titles like The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle, and Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery. You could also get lost in the role-playing classic Star Wars: KOTOR and save the republic or fall to the dark side. There are also great deals on Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions and both the Monument Valley games, among others.

Maybe you’d prefer to curl up on the sofa and read a nice ebook or soak in the tub and listen to an audiobook? You’ll find deals on tomes from authors like James Patterson, Jen Sincero, and Nicholas Sparks.

To round things off, there are some interesting deals on app subscriptions to help you unwind after all the overindulgence and stress of Thanksgiving. You can get 50 percent off an annual subscription to Calm, Fabulous, Run with Map My Run, and Freeletics, or 40 percent off Headspace. These might serve as good gift ideas, too.

When most people think of the Google Play Store, the first thing that comes to mind is smartphones. In a blog post today, the Google Play team announced three significant changes that should make it easier for Android fans to discover apps for all their devices, right from their phone. This includes recommendations of apps for non-phone devices, a search filter to focus on only games optimized for non-phone devices, and even a remote install feature that will let you deliver those apps to your Android TV, Wear OS watch, or Android Automotive-equipped car.

Google Play, the app store where you likely get most of your Android apps, has turned 10 years old and to celebrate the anniversary, Google has thrown out the old logo and given the online store an entirely new one. Well, when we say “entirely new,” we may be pushing it a little, as the new Google Play logo is still a multi-colored triangle resembling a traditional play button, so don’t expect a huge change.

Google Play Store now offers third-party app payments, but only for some users

Google will now open up its Play Store as a result of the European Union's Digital Markets Act, the company announced today. Now, any developers distributing apps or games in Europe (the European Economic Area, to be precise) will be able to sidestep the Google Play billing system with no penalty. The change comes after a similar push in South Korea.

"As of today, Google will not remove or reject updates of non-gaming apps from participating developers for offering alternative billing systems for EEA users. Google Play’s billing system will continue to be required for apps and games distributed via Play to users outside the EEA and for games distributed to users within the EEA. We expect to expand billing alternatives to developers of gaming apps for their users in the EEA, in advance of the DMA's effective date," Google's Estelle Werth, director of EU Government Affairs and Public Policy, said in a blog post.
