Since the end of April, it’s been rumored that Google will likely kill its Nexus line of products and replace it with Android Silver. However, Dave Burke, the head of Android engineering and the Nexus program at Google, denied that the former was true, but was somewhat tight-lipped on the latter.
“People have been commenting about Nexus because there is something else and they think that means the end of Nexus,” Burke said in an interview with ReadWrite. “That is the totally wrong conclusion to make.”
According to Burke, while some are working on the open source code for new versions of Android, others are designing a Nexus device meant to take advantage of the OS’ new features. As such, both happen in tandem, making it impossible to work on one without working on the other.
“There is no way you can build the open source code without the phone or tablet or whatever you are building,” said Burke. “You have to live and breathe the code you are developing.”
Interestingly, Burke did not discuss anything related to Google’s rumored Android Silver program, but implied that it is indeed in the works. “Android Silver is not something that we are commenting on right now.”
