Reduce your monthly mobile data usage with this simple trick

There are several reasons why you may want to disable autoplay videos in your social media feeds. If you’re constantly using up your mobile data, and you can’t figure out why, turning off autoplay videos will greatly reduce the amount of data that your social media apps are consuming.

Another reason why you may want to disable autoplay videos is if you suffer from photosensitive epilepsy, or if you are affected in some way by flashing images. Visual stimuli, such as flashing patterns or lights, can trigger seizures in some people. As we’ve recently seen, sending an animated GIF or video can cause someone harm if they’re sensitive to these types of images. Luckily, the steps below will allow you to turn off autoplay videos on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

How to turn off autoplay videos on Twitter

It’s easy to stop videos from automatically playing on Twitter. Here’s how to do it using both the iOS and Android app.

Step 1: Tap the cog icon (), then Settings.

Step 2: Select Data.

Step 3: Go to Video Autoplay, and select Never play videos automatically.

It’s really easy to stop videos from automatically playing on Facebook, too. Here’s how to do it in the iOS and Android app.

How to prevent pre-loading on Instagram

Instagram works a bit differently. As you probably already know, videos will play automatically as you scroll through your feed. The platform currently doesn’t give you the option to stop playing videos automatically, though we hope Instagram will give us the option to do so in the future. Instead, you’ll find an option to Use less data. This option doesn’t stop videos from playing, per se, but it will stop them from pre-loading. This will at least save you some data and prevent the app from pre-loading the videos as soon as you launch Instagram. Videos will not start playing until you scroll down and look at them.

How to use less data on Instagram in iOS

With iOS 17.4.1, Apple states that the update “provides important bug fixes and security updates and is recommended for all users.” Apple doesn’t mention any specifics of these bug fixes, but more details on what this security update addresses may be revealed at a later date.

iPhone not holding charge? How to replace an iPhone battery
How-to-replace-iPhone-battery-feature-image

When smartphones were in their infancy, battery packs were easy to replace. Most products let users open a flap on the back of the device to easily remove the battery, giving them a quick way to ditch a dead battery and install a new one. Fast forward to 2024, and that's a rarity. Replacing batteries is much more difficult today than it was a decade ago, and that's especially true for all iPhone models.

Whether you're working with the new iPhone 15 or an old iPhone 12, you can't just run out to the store and snag a new battery for your smartphone. Instead, you'll need to contact Apple directly or go through elaborate workarounds to install the battery yourself.

The 10 best apps for a second phone number in 2024
OnePlus 5 soft gold with the phone app open.

Having a second phone number can be handy for a variety of reasons. Perhaps you want to separate your business and personal calls, or you want a junk second number that you can use to sign up for services so you can avoid giving out your personal number to so many places. That's particularly importance with the frequency of annoying spam calls and messages that can pile up when your phone number is made public. You might also want a second number to use in situations where you want to be able to contact people occasionally but you don't necessarily want them to be able to reach your personal device directly, like when internet dating or using an app like AirBnB. Whatever the reason, there are many situations where having a number that you can give out which you can make use of but isn't directly tied to your personal life like your main phone number is can be important for safety and security.

While you could get a second SIM card (or even an eSIM), an easier option for casual use is to use an app that lets you set up a second phone line. Whether you're after an Android app or an iPhone app, you'll find plenty of options to get a second phone line, including some which are free to use. We've hunted down some of the best options for apps that will give you a second phone number for whatever reason you need it, and we're sharing them with you below.
