Huawei’s Honor to launch modular smartphone with no speaker or camera

Modular smartphones are all the rage at the moment, and Huawei’s budget smartphone arm Honor is expected to join those ranks Wednesday, according to rumors. However, its entrant will be somewhat odd: the base device will include no speaker or camera, leaving the consumer to purchase those modules separately.

Huawei has been rumored to be working on a type of modular smartphone for some time, however insiders in China only found out recently that it was launching Wednesday under the Honor sub-brand. While no pricing details have yet leaked, we at least know some of its potential specifications.

The phone will feature a curved display manufactured by Samsung, and is expected to support Huawei’s new fast-charging technology which is able to charge the battery to half-capacity in just five minutes. Functionality is customized through the addition of attachments, including the camera and speaker which won’t be included with the base device.

It’s not quite clear what Huawei is trying to go for when it comes to this device. Honor has made its mark by offering decently featured smartphones at a price few can beat, and so far modular phones remain expensive overall. We also don’t know what attachments will be boxed with the device.

There’s no details on what Huawei plans to include with the base device, nor a list of what attachments will be available. Until we know that — which looks to be as early as Wednesday — it’s really hard to say what the strategy is with Honor’s latest budget smartphone.

One thing we’ve seen in our own reviews of modular devices that is a problem area for modular phones is the price of the modules themselves: for example, the modules for the Lenovo Moto Z can easily run into the hundreds of dollars. Perhaps Huawei plans to undercut the competition here.

In other words — you’re going to want to stay tuned.

Here’s another look at Huawei’s futuristic folding phone
Unfolding the Huawei Mate Xs 2.

Remember the Huawei foldable phone that leaked only a week ago? Another image has hit the web, further driving home the likely reality of this device and its billfold-like design. The difference? Last week, the leaked image showed the phone open. Today's image shows it folded, with three distinct sections that make it unconventional even by foldable phone standards.

The leak comes courtesy of WhyLab on the Chinese website Weibo (spotted by GSMArena). Huawei executive Richard Yu used the phone in both images. When folded, the phone looks to be around the same size as a standard iPhone, although it does have a notably large camera block that resembles the camera on the Huawei Mate lineup.

One of this year’s most promising smartphones may have been delayed
A person holding the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra.

Fans of the Huawei Mate 60 may have to wait much longer before getting their hands on the Mate 70. According to Digital Chat Station on Weibo, Huawei has delayed the launch of the Mate 70 series due to issues with getting its in-house processor working with its new platform process. Both adaptations are delayed, so the current release schedule is being pushed to the mid-to-late fourth quarter, so likely sometime in November or December.

The text is translated from Chinese, so it’s a little hard to parse, but to give you some context, Huawei launched the Mate 60 Pro with a 7nm 5G-capable Kirin 9000s chipset, along with SK Hynix RAM. This was a surprise because some of the components included in the device shouldn’t have been available to Huawei to use due to sanctions. It’s not clear how Huawei got around this problem at the time, but what we do know is that the Huawei Mate 70 should come running a more powerful Kirin 9100 chipset.

Nothing will launch ‘an extraordinary new smartphone’ on July 31
Rear transparent shell of Nothing Phone 2a.

Nothing has announced that it will reveal its next smartphone, the Nothing Phone 2a Plus, at 5 a.m. ET on Wednesday, July 31. The handset is being described as "extraordinary" by its creators. The phone's tagline is "Plus. More. Extra." What does this mean? We've got a few ideas.

The Nothing Phone 2 launched in July 2023, followed by the Nothing Phone 2a in March of this year. Naming the new phone the "Nothing Phone 2a Plus" instead of "Nothing Phone 2 Plus" indicates that it will be based on the less expensive Nothing Phone 2a model. With this in mind, the phone's tagline probably gives a lot away.
