Don’t buy an Echo just to talk to Alexa — download Lexi instead

Let’s be honest — you’re only buying an Amazon Echo so you can talk to Alexa, right? But if paying $180 for the Echo (or $80 for the Echo Dot) seems excessive when it’s really just the virtual assistant you’re after, there may be a cost-effective solution. Meet Lexi, the iOS app that lets you talk to Alexa directly from your iPhone. Because if you’re really truthful with yourself, your probably don’t need yet another smart home device.

The great thing about Lexi is that it does practically everything Echo can do — need to place an order? Tell Lexi about it. Need to control your smart home from your smartphone? Lexi’s got it on lock. You can even use the app to ask Alexa questions, including the day’s weather, the latest headlines, or even directions to that event whose purpose you can’t quite remember (which Alexa, via Lexi, can tell you about, too).

The only thing you need in order to get Lexi to work is an Amazon account, which is something of a no-brainer given that you need an Amazon account to have Alexa anyway.

That said, Lexi doesn’t sync with Alexa’s music or book capabilities, which means that if you’re looking to stream from Amazon Prime Music, you’ll still need an Amazon Echo or some other workaround. But given that you’ll be able to access Skills, smart home controls, and Amazon product re-ordering, the pros seem to outweigh the cons at this point in time. And if nothing else, you’ll save about $175 on hardware.

As virtual assistants like Alexa, Siri, and Cortana become more ubiquitous, it seems that they may soon no longer be tied down to their original pairings. After all, Lexi isn’t even the first app of its kind — there’s also the Roger App, which is not only free, but also available for Android. This app also lets you use your smartphone to connect to Alexa via your Amazon account.

So if you’re looking for a way to avoid clutter, you may be able to avoid buying an Echo, and just download one of these apps instead.

Whatever you do, don’t buy this smart ring
A person wearing the Circular Ring Slim smart ring.

Revisiting a product, sometimes months down the line after I initially reviewed it, can be really enjoyable. I found I still liked the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro when I wore it for weeks again. And I realized that the Amazon Fire Max 11 is still a fantastic purchase a year after I first tried it out. So, when a revised Circular Ring Slim came along after a few months, I was very keen to get it back on my finger.

You see, the first Circular Ring Slim has one of the lowest scores I’ve ever given to a product in a review, and I really wanted to change it for the better. Unfortunately, I gave the Ring Slim a second chance, and it rewarded me with just as much disappointment as — plus a little bit more than — the first time around.
Does it look any different?

Amazon revives the Echo Spot with a new look ahead of Prime Day
The Echo Spot on a nightstand.

Prime Day is just around the corner on July 16-17, but Amazon is kicking off the summer festivities with the launch of the Echo Spot -- an updated version of the old smart alarm clock that's packed with new functionality. Featuring a customizable display, support for Alexa, and a built-in speaker, it's the ideal companion for a nightstand. The smart alarm clock is now available for $80, though Prime members can snag it for just $45 through July 17.

The Echo Spot uses an attractive circular design that's split into two parts. The top half is the customizable display, which supports multiple different colors and lets you quickly set alarms, check the weather, or access its many other apps. The bottom half houses the 1.73-inch speaker, allowing it to play music or respond to your voice commands.
