High-end Motorola Edge X flagship leaks with 144Hz OLED display

Motorola is prepping to launch a high-end device powered by the next-generation flagship Qualcomm chipset. The Motorola Edge X renders and specs have leaked online, which hints at an imminent launch. It is expected to be dubbed as Motorola Edge 30 Ultra in some regions, but will likely launch as the Edge X in the U.S., which tends to follow a different naming convention. As seen on the renders, it could feature a punch-hole camera cutout on its OLED display.

The latest development comes from 91Mobiles, which has collaborated with Steve Hemmerstoffer, aka OnLeaks, to reveal the details about the upcoming Motorola device. The smartphone is tipped to come equipped with a 6.6-inch OLED display that could have a 144Hz refresh rate and support for HDR10+. It will have a power button on the left, and the volume rocker and probably a Google Assistant button on the right edge. The display is claimed to be flat with no curved edges.

The Motorola Edge X could have a rectangular module to house triple cameras, LED flash, and a noise-canceling microphone. It is tipped to sport a 50-megapixel OmniVision OV50A primary lens, which is likely to be accompanied by a 50MP Samsung JN150 ultrawide sensor and a 2MP OmniVision OV20B1B depth sensor. On the front, you might get a 60MP selfie shooter, which would be the highest number of megapixels on any mainstream smartphone.

The Motorola Edge X could be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 898 SoC, which is supposed to be launched in the upcoming weeks. The smartphone could have 8GB/12GB LPDDR5x RAM paired with 128GB or 256GB UFS 3.1 storage options. It is likely to boot Android 11 with Motorola’s skin on top. It is also said to have support for stereo speakers and an IP52 rating.

The Motorola Edge X is touted to pack a 5,000mAh battery with support for 68W fast charging. Connectivity options include 5G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 6, NFC, Bluetooth 5.2, GPS, and USB Type-C. The smartphone is said to measure 163.1 x 76.5 x 8.8mm (10mm including the rear camera bump).

If all of this turns out to be true, it’ll be Motorola’s first premium flagship over the course of the past year. Up until now, the company has largely released devices in the budget and midrange segment, including the Moto Edge and Moto G Pure. The Moto Edge X, on the other hand, looks like a rival to other top-tier phones we’re expecting to see in the coming year, like the rumored Samsung Galaxy S22.

Motorola’s Edge 30 Ultra is a powerful Galaxy Note rival
Motorola Edge X30

Motorola has been offering stylus-toting phones for a while, but they’ve mostly been relegated to the budget segment and without any standout tricks. Now it appears that the company is finally ready to make a high-end phone with stylus support that offers some neat features in tow, just like  Samsung’s Galaxy Note series devices.
Motorola Smart Stylus
An XDA-Developers report citing a reliable source claims that the upcoming Motorola Edge 30 Ultra will offer stylus input support. But the stylus in question is not your average passive pen. Instead, it will borrow some of its capabilities from the Bluetooth-paired Samsung S Pen that shipped with the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. The report calls it Motorola Smart Stylus, and claims that it will support air gestures and also facilitate wireless charging. When paired with an external display, it can be used as a wireless pointer device. Plus, the button on Motorola’s stylus will also double as a media playback control hub.

Motorola’s “next-gen” stylus is said to resemble the stylus that Samsung offered with the Galaxy S21 Ultra, going by its looks. But it appears that Motorola is also going down the same route of folly as Samsung did last year. Instead of shipping a stylus with the phone or putting it inside a slot, Samsung sold it separately as the Galaxy S21 Ultra had no slot for the S Pen. The Motorola Edge 30 Ultra is said to pull the same stunt, and the Motorola will be selling a smart folio case with a dedicated pocket to house the stylus.

Moto Edge X30, first Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 phone likely to launch on December 9
Motorola Edge X30

Motorola has been very active lately with launches in the mobile segment ranging from entry-level to high-end devices. Now it looks like the race for the first Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 smartphone is heating up and Motorola is trying to get the upper hand by being the first to launch a smartphone with the new chipset. The Lenovo-owned smartphone maker has confirmed that it will be announcing an Edge smartphone with Qualcomm’s latest flagship chip on December 9. This is likely to be the Moto Edge X30 (or just Motorola Edge), but there’s also a possibility of the Motorola G200 launching at the same time.

The teaser doesn’t reveal much more about the device, and a lot is still under wraps, but there are some tidbits that we can gather from the phone’s certification. For starters, its battery certification shows a 5,000mAh cell with a charging capacity of 68.2W, which is one of the highest in Motorola phones. Consumers in China are likely to have many choices in terms of storage as there are reportedly 6GB/8GB/12GB/16GB RAM and 128GB/256GB/512GB storage options. Chen Jin, Lenovo China’s head of mobile division, also revealed that the phone has Gorilla Glass protection on both sides as well as the latest My UX 3.0 software.

Motorola Edge Hands-on review: A midrange phone with flagship aspirations
Motorola Edge with screen on.

The midrange phone market is sparse in the U.S., with most phones costing closer to $1,000 or lower than $400 and very few well-known brands in between aside from the newly-launched Google Pixel 5a and the Samsung Galaxy A52. The Motorola Edge now joins this crowd, hitting the U.S. market at a $700 price point, though it’ll start at $200 off at launch.

It’s also worth pointing out that the Motorola Edge isn’t exactly a copycat of the Moto Edge 20 that’s being released in international markets alongside the Edge 20 Lite and Edge 20 Pro. While both models have lots of similarities, the two big differences from overseas markets are that the U.S. model has a 6.8-inch screen and a larger 5,000mAh battery. The logic behind this differentiation isn’t entirely clear, but it does give U.S. customers an edge in battery runtime compared to international buyers.
