Samsung unveils Galaxy A42, a budget 5G smartphone, and Trio wireless charger

Samsung has announced a series of new mobile products at a virtual event today including the Galaxy A42, which the phone maker claims is its most affordable 5G smartphone yet. The company also introduced a new Trio wireless charging station that can simultaneously top up three devices, and the budget Galaxy Tab A7 Android tablet.

The products were notably not released in conjunction with the IFA technology show in Germany, which is officially ramping up right now. Samsung announced in July that it would skip the show, Europe’s largest tech fair, in favor of holding its own events.

While details were kept to the minimum, Samsung did share a few specifications. The Galaxy A42 offers a 6.6-inch OLED screen and an array of four cameras on the back. It’s expected to go on sale later this year. Samsung didn’t confirm the rest of the hardware but SamMobile reports the Galaxy A42 is rumored to run on the Snapdragon 690 processor, 5,000mAh battery, 4GB of RAM, and carry a 48-megapixel primary camera. As per a blog post on Samsung Germany’s website, the Galaxy A42 5G costs 369 euros (about $440).

We’ve reached out to Samsung for more information on the Galaxy A42’s availability and we’ll update the story when we hear back.

The new Trio wireless charger succeeds Samsung’s Wireless Charger Duo which was capable of charging two devices at a time. Trio builds upon that with additional space for a third device. Samsung didn’t say at how quickly Trio can top up three devices. It will cost 99 euros (about $120) in Europe and will be available in two color options: Black and white.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab A7, as the name suggests, is the latest budget alternative to the company’s premium Tab S7 lineup. It has a 10.4-inch screen (with a resolution of 2000 x 1200 pixels), a total of four Dolby Atmos-compatible speakers, and an ample 7040mAh battery. It’s powered by Qualcomm’s midrange Snapdragon 662 chipset and does not support 5G connectivity. The Galaxy Tab A7 will launch sometime later this year in three color variants: Gray, silver, and gold. Its LTE variant is priced at 282 euros (about $335), while the Wi-Fi-only variant will set you back by 223 euros (about $265).

Samsung also has a new fitness tracker: the 50-euro Galaxy Fit 2. It offers the usual trappings you’d expect from such a device including 15-day battery life, a heart rate sensor, sleep tracking, and a 1.1-inch OLED screen for updates.

Is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 waterproof?
Back of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is the slimmest and lightest Galaxy Fold device yet. It's also the most technically capable, offering a new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, a brighter inner display, slightly improved cameras, and more. Simply put, it's one of the best folding phones you can buy in 2023. But did the thinner and lighter design have any impact on the Fold 5's water resistance?

Last year's Galaxy Z Fold 4 offered an IPX8 rating for water resistance, not waterproofing. The two terms are used interchangeably every now and then, but there’s a clear difference between the two. Does the Z Fold 5 keep that IPX8 water-resistance rating? Does it have something better? Something worse? Here's what you need to know.

Does the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 have a headphone jack?
The top of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5.

If you're in the market for a folding phone, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is one of the best you can buy. It's powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip (customized for Samsung) and features a sleeker build and brighter display, among other improvements, compared to its predecessor. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 also gets support for an improved S Pen and better multitasking abilities with support for up to four apps simultaneously.

Besides its productivity features, the Galaxy Z Fold's expansive inner screen also makes it an excellent device for entertainment and gaming. Samsung says the inner folding display gets as bright as 1,750 nits -- the brightest ever on any Galaxy Z Fold series device. This ensures the display delivers clear and well-defined output, irrespective of how challenging the ambient lighting may be. For purists looking to consume media on this large screen, one question remains: does the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 have a 3.5mm headphone jack?

Timer running on the Galaxy Z Flip 5 cover screen.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is here, and it's flippin' marvelous. It's largely just Samsung that has defined the nascent flip smartphone market, and while flipping and folding phones haven't quite broken into the mainstream yet, the Z Flip 5 is sure to tempt more and more people into buying into the future of smartphone design. The biggest new addition to the Z Flip 5 is the larger outer screen, which is a big upgrade over the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4's much smaller display and worthy of rivaling the Motorola Razr Plus's impressively large outer display.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is a fantastic piece of tech, packed with the latest and most powerful hardware Samsung can get its hands on. But what about a piece of very old tech? What about the humble 3.5mm headphone jack? Does Samsung's latest flip phone have room for a headphone jack, or does the Z Flip 5 follow the same trend of the last few years in omitting the venerable port?
