Vizio unveils two HD Android smartphones – but only for China

vizio smartphoneHow do you like the sound of a high-end Vizio smartphone running stock Android 4.1 Jelly Bean? What if I told you the 5-inch display has a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels and is backed up by a dual-core Qualcomm processor clocked at 1.5GHz and 2GB of RAM? Well, if you want one you’ll need to buy it in China because that’s the only market Vizio is currently targeting with its first smartphone releases in a couple of years.

Alongside the flagship model there’s a 4.7-inch 720p smartphone also running Jelly Bean. This cheaper model is packing a 1.2GHz dual-core MediaTek chip with 1GB of RAM. It’s also a dual-SIM device and so you can press a button to remove the chrome bottom plate and access the dual-SIM slot and the microSD card slot. The back is matte plastic and will apparently come in a variety of colors beyond the white that Vizio showed off.

According to The Verge, Vizio’s CTO Matt McRae mentioned that the devices would run on AT&T’s 3G network in the States, but the lack of official carrier support Stateside means no 4G LTE. China is a good target for Vizio since the market is growing so fast over there right now. If things go well we may see some Vizio smartphones on U.S. carriers in the not too distant future.

The incredible OnePlus 12 has a $100 discount today
A person holding the OnePlus 12.

While Apple, Samsung, and Google devices tend to dominate the mobile device market, there are a handful of third-party alternatives that are just as good (if not better in some cases), and one of these underdogs is OnePlus. For years, OnePlus has been releasing fast, powerful, and feature-rich smartphones, and, as luck would have it, one of them is on sale today:

When you purchase both the 256GB and 512GB versions of the OnePlus 12 directly through OnePlus, you’ll get $100 off the usual MSRP! It’s one of the best phone deals we’ve seen all week, and when we tested the OnePlus 12 last April, our team said: “The OnePlus 12 is a tremendous smartphone value — and one of the top Android phones to beat in 2024.”

At last, phones with massive batteries are coming
iQOO 13, Oppo Find X8 Pro and Vivo X200 Pro -- silicon carbon battery-equipped phones.

The smartphone industry is eyeing a rather innovation-heavy year ahead, one that could bring us more capable cameras, useful AI deployment, and newer form factors. Another welcome advancement is a possible shift to dramatically bigger batteries fitted inside phones. It should, thankfully, be a rather open approach to battery innovation and extend from flagships down to the budget segment.

According to a reliable leaker posting on the Chinese microblogging platform Weibo, a Xiaomi sub-brand could put a massive 7,500mAh battery inside one of its budget phones later this year, and the phone in question is likely to be the upcoming Redmi Turbo 4 Pro. We've recently looked at the Redmi Note 14 Pro Plus, which has a 5,110mAh cell inside.

These accessories truly leveled up my OnePlus 13 experience
OnePlus 13 Aramid fiber and magnetic case lying on a blue couch.

The OnePlus 13 is a very exciting phone. Even though we're just a few weeks into 2025, this feels like one of the most compelling candy bar-style phones to launch this year. It marks massive leaps for OnePlus' flagship lineup, especially with improved resistance against water and dust with its IP68 and IP69 ratings.

What truly makes OnePlus 13 fanciful to me is its freshly added support for the "Mag" line of accessories. These magnetic accessories are designed to make your time with the OnePlus 13 much more convenient and elevate its status further into the ranks of flagships. Here's how these accesories and features have made the OnePlus 13 more endearing to me.
