WhatsApp cozies up to Facebook: Beta app build offers to ‘improve my Facebook experience’

Barely a week after WhatsApp announced it was doing away with its $1 annual charge, we’re starting to see new information that points to a closer relationship between the popular messaging service and its parent company, Facebook.

A post on German site Caschys’ Blog shows screenshots of a new beta build, which provides a new option for WhatsApp users to share their account information with the social network to “improve my Facebook experiences.” It’s pretty unclear what that means or how that integration will benefit one’s Facebook, but we have reached out to Facebook and will update this post accordingly. There are also new service terms users will have to agree to in the new build.

Facebook largely left WhatsApp alone after it acquired the company for $19 billion in 2014, and at the time, WhatsApp’s CEO and Co-Founder Jan Koum said the messaging service would “remain autonomous and operate independently” of Facebook, and that “nothing” will change for users. But it seems like the tide is changing and Facebook may want a bigger piece of the pie.

WhatsApp is known for its end-to-end encryption that protects conversations from being snooped on. The latest beta build features a security tab that allows users to toggle on a setting to show that their messages are encrypted. Messages are encrypted regardless of what you choose, but this at least offers an option for users to see that their messages are indeed secure.

A Reddit post discussing the new beta build also shows screenshots from the new build, revealing a tool for users to verify that their conversations are encrypted by scanning QR codes. Another screenshot also hints at an upcoming document feature, which would likely allow users to manage files received through the app.

As it is a beta build, keep in mind that these features may not end up to the final public version.

Call Links by WhatsApp

WhatsApp is taking a couple of pages out of Zoom's playbook. The Meta-owned company is rolling out the Call Links feature, making it easier for people to join audio and video calls with just one tap on the phone screen.

Mark Zuckerberg announced the new feature in a Facebook post on Monday morning. Starting this week, WhatsApp users will be able to tap the Call Links option within the Calls tab and create a link for audio or video calls to send to their friends and family, who will then tap on the link and join the call from there.

WhatsApp will now allow users to react to messages with any emoji, in an expansion of its reaction feature that came out last year. It's coming to iOS and Android over the coming weeks, and it brings more personalization to one of the world's most used messaging apps.

Once you get the update, the emoji reactions will work as they do now, with a long press bringing up the basic six options with the incision of a new plus button. Pressing that plus icon will show you the new expanded set of emojis, and you'll be able to add whatever emoji you want. This includes skin tone variations, family types, and more.

Moving WhatsApp chats from Android to iOS has been a painful task for years. But not anymore, as Apple and WhatsApp have made the process a whole lot easier. Starting today, Apple is adding a feature that allows you to move chats between the two platforms. The feature is a part of Apple’s existing “Move to iOS” Android application. It’s worth noting that the feature is currently available for beta users only, so non-beta users might have to wait for a week or two as it's rolled out in phases.

There have been third-party solutions here and there, but nothing officially backed by Apple or WhatsApp. With the feature becoming available, users will be able to move their chats swiftly from Android to iOS.
