YouTube Red is a great service if you want to get rid of those pesky ads, but there’s one group of people that hasn’t been able to enjoy YouTube ad-free: kids. Well, that’s finally changing.

YouTube Kids — a video service from YouTube aimed at allowing parents to let their kids watch videos without stumbling across anything inappropriate for their age — is finally integrating with YouTube Red. Basically, kids can now watch videos without ads, as long as their parents pay for it.

Of course, YouTube Red isn’t just great for watching videos without ads — it also lets you download videos for offline use. In other words, if you’re heading on a long car drive, you can now download a few videos for the kids to watch on the way. Last but not least is the ability to use YouTube in background mode — in other words, you can now start up those kids tunes and play them in the background while still using Google Maps to get where you need to be.

To get started with both services, all you’ll need to do is download the YouTube Kids app and make sure you have a YouTube Red membership. You can then sign in to that membership from the parental controls section of the YouTube Kids app, and follow the on-screen instructions.

Google hasn’t released any numbers about YouTube Red, but has said that YouTube Kids has already served up more than 10 billion video views. Not only that, but a report from The Verge mentions that YouTube Red subscriptions make up around 4 to 5 percent of the income being made by YouTube content creators.

According to Google, more changes to YouTube Kids are on the way, such as a few changes that will help parents better customize the content that their kids watch. The new integration is currently available in the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand.

YouTube relaxes rules around swearing and demonetization
YouTube

Potty-mouthed YouTubers will be delighted to learn that the streaming site has relaxed its rules around swearing and demonetization.

The change comes after a more restrictive policy introduced in November caused an uproar among YouTube creators, especially the ones who like to use colorful language in their videos. The harsher rules introduced then resulted in profanity-laced content being demonetized, a situation that had serious consequences for those trying to make a living out of creating YouTube content.

Don’t watch this YouTube video if you have a Pixel 7
Someone holding the Google Pixel 7 Pro.

Reports of another "cursed" piece of content have been making the internet rounds as a video on YouTube has been causing Pixel devices to crash. The video, a clip from the 1979 movie Alien, seems to cause Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, and some Pixel 6 and Pixel 6a smartphones to instantly reboot without warning.

As first reported on Reddit and spotted by Mishaal Rahman, the video will begin to play for only a second or two and then instantly reboot the Pixel 7 it's being played on. Digital Trends can confirm the bug to be active and working, too, with the video instantly rebooting a Pixel 7 Pro we tested it on.

YouTube recently announced a number of changes to its video-watching interface. One of these changes is a new feature known as Ambient Mode.

In this guide, we'll go over exactly what Ambient Mode on YouTube is and show you how to enable or disable it.
What is Ambient Mode on YouTube?
Ambient Mode is basically a lighting effect that surrounds a given YouTube video with a soft, glowing light that usually reflects the colors featured in the video itself. The effect kind of resembles the glow of a television screen in a room where the lights are off (which YouTube has said was the inspiration for the effect). YouTube also said that Ambient Mode is supposed to make the video-watching experience of its dark mode "more immersive." Ambient Mode was officially announced in late-October 2022 and is available on the web, Android, and iOS.
