The first G.I. Joe movie was not well-received by critics but it did just well enough with movie-goers for the studio to consider making a sequel. Somewhat intelligently they realized that there were problems with the first one and went out and got some fresh talent for the new movie.
One of the changes was at director where they replaced Stephen Sommers (The Mummy movies) and replaced him with Jon M. Chu (Step Up 2: The Streets). There’s been some consternation from the internet concerning whether or not Chu is up to the task considering his music/dance movie past. However, based solely on this trailer it appears like he’s made something that at least looks and feels entertaining. There’s hope to be had.
One of the other moves that the studio made was to actually put Cobra Commander in his famous mask and to add the Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson to the movie, which makes any action movie at least 10 points better. Plus, they added Bruce Willis as the Original Joe.
Despite how poor the first one was, the sequel appears to be headed in right direction.
G. I. Joe: Retaliation is slated for a summer 2012 on June 29.
