Acidman (2022)

ACIDMAN Trailer (2023) Dianna Agron, Thomas Haden Church

Thomas Haden Church and Dianna Agron star in this sci-fi drama about a man who has become so obsessed with UFOs that he has cut off the world and others around him. Lloyd (Haden Church), who has become known by locals as “Acidman,” lives in the middle of nowhere, hell-bent on finding evidence of life on other planets. When his estranged daughter, Maggie (Agron), visits to relay important news, she discovers that her father’s mental state is even worse than she thought.

A lovely story about father-daughter relationships as much as it is about the sci-fi backdrop, Acidman will draw you in and keep you engaged through its 87-minute runtime. Both Haden Church and Agron were praised for their performances, with many reviewers naming Acidman among Haden Church’s best work. While the story is admittedly slow in the beginning, reviewer Richard Crouse says that even though the movie “takes patience from the viewer,” it “pays off with a feeling of gentle authenticity.”

Infinity Chamber (2016)

Infinity Chamber Trailer #1 (2017) | Movieclips Indie

Sci-fi movies and AI technology go hand in hand, and with AI making its mark more than ever, films like Infinity Chamber rise to relevance once again. The sci-fi thriller is about a group of people interacting with an AI machine that manages an automated detention facility. Frank (Christopher Soren Kelly), a man accused of planting a virus in a government computer, is being held in this facility, which is controlled by an AI named Howard (Jesse D. Arrow), whose sole focus is presumably to keep him alive. Each time Frank believes he has gone free, he awakens to realize it was all a recurring dream and he’s still in a personal hell.

An enthralling tale of man versus machine, Infinity Chamber is deeply cerebral with dystopian flair. Though it can become repetitive at times, that’s precisely the point. As far as low-budget sci-fi films go, you might find Infinity Chamber worth checking out if you appreciate smaller Indie gems.

It Came From Outer Space (1953)

It Came From Outer Space (1953) Official Trailer Movie HD

Don’t expect high-flying action, CGI, and complex camera tricks in this sci-fi horror film, which dates all the way back to the 1950s. But It Came From Outer Space is a riveting movie that was considered high-tech for its time thanks to the use of captivating (again, for the time) 3D effects. It’s the age-old story of a young couple enjoying a night under the stars when a large object crashes to Earth not far from them. As they investigate, they see evidence of an alien spaceship, but before John (Richard Carlson) can tell others, it’s buried by a landslide.

When strange things start happening, including people going missing, some of whom return not acting like themselves, Sheriff Warren (Charles Drake) starts to think that maybe John was right all along. So begins an investigation to find these alien creatures and stop the madness, hopefully through peaceful means. Suspenseful and exciting, It Came From Outer Space will reignite the “is there life on other planets?” debate with friends and family after you watch it.
