We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, and the best movies on Amazon Prime Video.

All Is Lost (2013)

In the wake of Robert Redford’s death, All Is Lost is the perfect way to remember just how brilliant he was as an actor. The film is almost entirely wordless and follows Redford as a solo voyager on a ship who finds that his boat is taking on water.

After sailing unwittingly into a storm, he fights for survival as his supplies begin to dwindle and his equipment has been disabled. Even without much dialogue, All Is Lost is utterly captivating thanks to Redford’s central performance and the idea of confronting one’s mortality on this ship.

You can watch All Is Lost on Amazon Prime Video.

Last Flag Flying (2017)

It might be one of Richard Linklater’s more underdiscussed films, but Last Flag Flying is a type of fascinating dramedy that’s rarely made. The film tells the story of three Vietnam veterans who reunite to bury one of their sons, who also died in war.

A fascinating look at the way war can shape the lives of different generations, Last Flag Flying is anchored by three magnetic performances from Steve Carrell, Bryan Cranston, and Laurence Fishburne. The film is funny, strange, and sometimes a little unsettling, but all in the service of a detailed look at the lives of its main characters.

You can watch Last Flag Flying on Amazon Prime Video.

The Idea of You (2024)

A romantic comedy that leans heavily into fantasy, The Idea of You tells the story of a middle-aged mom who finds herself in a relationship with a much younger pop star. As they attempt to blend their lives, the duo struggles with the expectations, realities, and judgement of those around them.

Anne Hathaway is utterly magnetic at the center of this movie. While it might not be totally realistic, The Idea of You is romantic enough to make those kinds of questions feel irrelevant.
