Nine months ago, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson announced that he’d be starring in a Baywatch movie based on the popular ’90s television series about a group of California lifeguards. That project is now one step closer to hitting the beach, according to a new report indicating the Baywatch movie has found its director.

Horrible Bosses and Identity Theft filmmaker Seth Gordon is in talks to direct Baywatch, according to Variety, with Paramount Pictures reportedly planning to turn the 11-season series that rejuvenated the career of David Hasselhoff into a feature-length, “R”-rated comedy starring Johnson. If the report proves true, the studio seems to be aiming for an adaptation akin to 2012’s 21 Jump Street film, which took a raunchy, comedic approach to bringing the popular TV drama to the big screen and ended up a critical and commercial success.

Baywatch movie has been in the works for quite a while now, with various writers, directors, and stars attached to the project over the years. The film gained some serious steam back in September 2014 when Johnson announced his involvement via Instagram.

“This is my beach bitch!” wrote Johnson in that initial announcement. “Rumors are true… we’re making #BAYWATCH the movie. Edgy, raunchy and hopefully, funny as all hell. Cue slo mo running on the beach… #WhoNeedsMouthToMouth #RedShortsBeHugginABrotha”

Johnson is set to co-produce the film as well as star in it, and Gordon’s involvement suggests that it will almost certainly be aimed at adult audiences. After gaining significant attention for his debut film, the 2007 documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, Gordon has alternated between television comedy and “R”-rated comedies — with 2011’s Horrible Bosses far exceeding expectations on its way to becoming the highest-grossing black comedy of all time (passing 1989’s The War of the Roses).

The most recent screenwriters to take a run at the Baywatch script were Damian Shannon & Mark Swift, who penned the 2009 reboot of the Friday the 13th franchise as well as 2003’s monster mash-up Freddy vs. Jason.

Dwayne Johnson is The Smashing Machine in a first look at the MMA drama
Dwayne Johnson sits in the ring in The Smashing Machine.

Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, is known for his big smile, ripped body, and trademark tattoos. However, Johnson has completely transformed his appearance to play Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine.
A24 has released the first image of Johnson as Kerr, a former wrestler and MMA star who rose to prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Despite fighting for a living, Kerr's biggest battles came outside of the sport as he struggled with drug addiction and marital problems. As Kerr, Johnson is seen with no tattoos and a full head of hair as he sits in the corner of the ring while trainers work on his body.
“The Smashing Machine follows Mark Kerr, the legendary MMA fighter from the no-holds-barred era of the UFC at the peak of his career,” the official synopsis reads. “He struggles with addiction, winning, love, and friendship in the year 2000.”
Kerr's fascinating life was previously portrayed in HBO's documentary,The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr.
Johnson's co-star in The Smashing Machine is Emily Blunt. The actress is seen in the bottom-right corner of the image looking at Kerr. Blunt stars as Kerr's wife, Dawn Staples. "While trying to set up a life together, she struggles to find her place within Mark’s chaotic and contradictory world," per A24. Blunt and Johnson previously starred together in 2021's Jungle Cruise.

The Smashing Machine marks a major change of direction for Johnson. Over the last five years, the WWE superstar has predominantly starred in expensive blockbusters, including Black Adam, Red Notice, Jumanji: The Next Level, and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. The Smashing Machine is one of Johnson's first dramatic roles in over a decade.

This Dwayne Johnson film is Netflix’s most popular action movie. Here’s why you should watch it
Dwayne Johnson in Snitch.

Earlier this year, Snitch celebrated its 10th anniversary in a very subdued fashion. After all, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has starred in so many action flicks that they all tend to blur together. In the movie, Johnson plays John Matthews, a father who is alarmed when his son, Jason Collins (Rafi Gavron), is sentenced to jail for 10 years on bogus drug charges. To help his son earn his freedom, John agrees to undertake a very deadly personal mission and infiltrate the criminal underworld in order to expose drug dealers who have escaped justice until now.

Snitch may have been destined to remain forgotten until it debuted near the top of Netflix's Netflix's top 10 most popular movies. And suddenly, a mid-budget action film from a decade ago has become a streaming hit. But there's more to Snitch's newfound success than Netflix's infamous algorithm. This is a movie that has earned its revival by offering things that many of Johnson's other action films couldn't provide. That's why we're sharing the three reasons why you should watch Snitch on Netflix, especially if you want to save yourself a trip to the theater this weekend.
