The best new shows to stream on Netflix, Hulu, Max (HBO), and more

The cast of The Wheel of Time season 3.
Prime Video

It would be hard to ask for a better week of original programming than the one just handed to us by the major streamers. Amazon has the big-budget fantasy series, The Wheel of Time, back for its third season on Prime Video. Apple TV+ has debuted a terrific new crime series, Dope Thief, while Peacock has entered the chat with one of its most arresting original shows to date: Long Bright River.

It’s hard to go wrong with any of those shows, but there’s still more to enjoy in the streaming-verse. Disney+ and Max are running new episodes of Daredevil: Born Again and The Righteous Gemstones every week. Both of those series are appointment TV, even if you can watch them whenever you choose.

When you’re done here, check out the best new movies to stream this week, as well as the best shows on Netflix, the best shows on Hulu, the best new shows on Max, the best shows on Amazon Prime Video, and the best shows on Disney+.

Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Max, Disney+, Paramount+, Peacock, and Apple TV+ all have one thing in common: They’re more expensive than they used to be. We can live with higher rates as long as new shows keep coming, but it’s always a good idea to consider signing up for the ad-supported tiers, which are worth it if you can sit through a few commercials.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power may have the bigger brand, but The Wheel of Time is Amazon’s real answer to Game of Thrones… even if it’s still several levels below it. As Robert Jordan’s fantasy series enters its third season, the female sisterhood called the Aes Sedai is divided by the revelation that some of them have been devoted to the Dark One all along.

With the Aes Sedai and the power of the White Tower at their weakest, Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski) is struggling to take control of his destiny as the Dragon Reborn, even if it means defying prophecy. Rand is also openly wary about Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike) and her attempts to control him. What he doesn’t realize is that Moiraine has seen the future, and only she or Rand will survive the battles ahead. But not both of them.

Is House of David a Biblical Game of Thrones? Not quite, but it does dramatize one of the most famous stories from the Bible: David vs. Goliath. Michael Iskander portrays David, the young shepherd who steps up to face Goliath (Martyn Ford), a giant among men… but not actually a fantasy-sized giant.

David’s rise in prominence alarms King Saul (Ali Suliman), who correctly recognizes that he’s a threat to both his reign and his power. But as Saul does everything he can to cling to his position, David’s ascension seems to be preordained.

Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) is no stranger to danger in Reacher, but even he might be in over his head in the newly released third season. When a DEA agent goes missing, her colleague, Susan Duffy (Sonya Cassidy), recruits Jack to undertake an extremely dangerous mission. To infiltrate the criminal organization run by Zachary Beck (Anthony Michael Hall), Jack “saves” Beck’s son, Richard (Johnny Berchtold), from a botched kidnapping.

That got Jack in the door with Beck, but his snooping around for the missing agent may get him killed. Beck also employs Paul “Paulie” van Hoven (Olivier Richters), a bodyguard who is one of the few individuals that actually towers over Jack himself. In a one-on-one fight, Jack may not be able to beat him.

Peter Craig’s adaptation of Dennis Tafoya’s Dope Thief has an audacious premise. Childhood friends, Ray Bowers (Brian Tyree Henry) and Manny Carvalho (Wagner Moura), have built a good long-running con where they pretend to be DEA agents and rob drug dealers.

This time, Ray and Manny have gotten in over their heads. People died during their latest robbery, and their getaway wasn’t exactly clean. The criminals want their stolen money back, and now Ray and Manny have attracted the attention of the real DEA as well. It’s only a matter of time before one or both factions catch up with Ray and Manny to exact their pound of flesh from them.

Three years between seasons is a pretty long time, and it sure feels that way for Mark Scout (Adam Scott) when he awakens back on the severed floor in Severance season 2. We’re not going to reveal major spoilers for the season premiere, but you should be wondering how much Mark, Dylan George (Zach Cherry), Helly Riggs (Britt Lower), and Irving Bailiff (John Turturro) remember about their excursion outside of the office.

Everyone on the severed floor underwent a procedure that created an “innie” persona who had no memories about their personal lives. All of them revert to their “outie” personas when they go home after work. However, the innies now know that they’ve been misled by their employers at Lumon, and deeper mysteries remain to be explored in season 2.

If Amanda Seyfried wasn’t already a star, Long Bright River would have been her star-making turn. It may even earn her an Emmy Award this fall. Seyfried plays Mickey Fitzpatrick, a single mother and police officer who is the first to realize that the deaths of local female sex workers and addicts isn’t a mere coincidence. There’s a serial killer targeting these women, and Mickey’s superiors on the police would rather look the other way.

Mickey has a personal stake in this because her sister, Kacey (Ashleigh Cummings), not only fits the profile of the victims, she’s gone missing as well. In order to find a killer — and hopefully save Kacey — Mickey turns to her former partner, Truman Dawes (Nicholas Pinnock), to help her cut through the red tape of the investigation. However, Mickey’s inability to trust may put both of their lives in danger.

Suits LA is an odd beast in that the first episode was completely tonally different from the show that allegedly spawned it. This show does share continuity with Suits, and Harvey Specter (Gabriel Machet) will be back at some point. For now, the focal point is entertainment lawyer Ted Black (Stephen Amell), a man with deep-seated daddy issues and a dark past from his time as a prosecutor in New York.

Ted’s also due for a lesson about how much or how little power he actually has in his current law firm. As demonstrated in the pilot episode, Ted’s also facing a career setback that will be extremely difficult to come back from.

Back in the long ago days of 2015-2018, Daredevil was the best superhero show around. Daredevil: Born Again has a long way to go before it reaches that level, but it’s a welcome step up from many of the recent Marvel live-action shows. Charle Cox is back as Matt Murdock, but no longer as Daredevil. Since we last saw Matt, something terrible has happened that convinced him to give up his alter ego.

In the present, Matt’s old enemy, Wilson Fisk/Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio), may be the next mayor of New York City. And no matter how much Matt wants to put his past to bed, he’ll have to get back in costume to right a few wrongs. After all, the devil’s work is never done.

For the fourth and final season, Eli (John Goodman) is kind of checked out, and his adult children  — Jesse (Danny McBride), Judy (Edi Patterson), and Kelvin (Adam DeVine), are all jockeying for position to inherit his mega-church empire.

The Gemstones may not be united, but they may have to come together again, because there are storm clouds heading in their particular direction. And almost all of the Gemstones have a gift for making enemies who would just love to bring them down.

The names and faces change with the seasons on The White Lotus since every story is set at a different White Lotus resort. But one man has appeared in all three seasons: Greg Hunt (Jon Gries), and he’s no longer calling himself by that name. Greg’s paranoid ex-wife thought he had sinister intentions towards her, and perhaps she was right after all.

This season’s story is set in Thailand, and the sprawling cast of newcomers includes Kate Bohr (Leslie Bibb), Jaclyn Lemon (Michelle Monaghan), and Laurie Duffy (Carrie Coon), a trio of longtime friends who are on a girl’s trip. By the end of their stay, those bonds of friendship may be tested… if they get to go home at all.

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has a new historical drama called A Thousand Blows. This series is set in England during the 1880s and features two Jamaican immigrants, Hezekiah Moscow (Malachi Kirby) and Alec Munroe (Francis Lovehall), who want to reinvent themselves in their new country.

Although Henry wants to be a lion tamer, his bare-knuckled brawls may be better suited for London’s underground fighting. That puts Henry and Alec in the middle of a conflict between Henry “Sugar” Goodson (Stephen Graham) and Mary Carr (Erin Doherty), the leader of an all-female crime syndicate.

And as we come to find out, the relationship between Collins and Bradford has soured in the years since the latter recruited the former.

There are bigger issues in play, including the nature of “Paradise,” and why someone would risk everything by murdering the president. However, Collins may have a difficult time finding answers after the evidence starts to suggest that he was the one who killed Collins.

If Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) thought that his trials were behind him, then The Night Agent season 2 serves as a reminder that he’s far from infallible. Peter’s first mission out as an official Night Agent goes horribly wrong, sending him on a personal spiral.

However, Peter doesn’t have much free time to grieve, as a fast-moving situation involving Iran means he has to get back on his game quickly. Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan) also pushes her way back into Peter’s life, but the life-and-death stakes remain high.

When he’s not busy editing and writing, you can find him tending to his meticulously planned content schedule or dreaming up new ways to get more eyeballs to the site.

Jason’s love for cinema started when he was 10 years old. Saddled with a nasty cold, he was forced to stay home from school for a full week. To pass the time, he watched a marathon of classic Alfred Hitchcock films on Cinemax and the rest is history. He furthered his film education by raiding used bookstores to read dusty old film criticism volumes and salacious movie star biographies. His real education included studying at Whitman College and then Syracuse University, where he won a student Emmy for producing a truly terrible television series.

His career began at Marvel Entertainment, where he worked in the Digital Products department, and then DC Comics, where he worked in publishing and content strategy. He then worked at Warner Bros. and Screen Rant.

Jason currently resides in Seattle but has yet to appear in a Cameron Crowe movie. He loves hot coffee with cream and sugar, video games, bread, napping, and movies (duh), but not necessarily in that order. His favorite movies are The Thing, All About Eve, The Ice Storm, Rear Window, Heat, The Cranes are Flying, Belle de Jour, Showgirls, and Clue. He thinks Mad Men is genius, still watches Seinfeld twice a week, and likes listening to shoegaze music, podcasts, and Lana Del Rey. If you see him on the street, please, for the love of God, do not engage in conversation with him.

The best shows on Disney+ right now (February 2025)
The main characters of Pixar's Win or Lose.

The months when Disney+ debuts multiple scripted series may be a thing of the past, but February has been a very good month for the streamer. The Pixar original series Win or Lose has debuted on the platform, while Disney+ inexplicably burned off every episode of Your Neighborhood Spider-Man in just three weeks rather than letting it run into March.
Perhaps Disney+ just didn't want the Spider-Man animated series to be on at the same time as Daredevil: Born Again, which is one of this year's most-anticipated shows. But you'll have to wait until March 4 to see that series. But in the meantime, you can find the rest of the best shows on Disney+ below.
