Danger 5, Bosch, and the hottest stuff to watch on Netflix and Amazon this week

For cord cutters, the anticipation of watching an event live gets transferred over to the weekly dumps of content on the various video streaming platforms. What’s dropping when becomes important knowledge to have as you organize your queue. If you don’t have time to comb through all the content coming down the series of tubes that is the Internet, don’t worry—we do. Here’s our picks for what you should watch this week.

Danger 5 Season 2

Netflix

One of the best parts of streaming services, outside the ability to watch old favorites and marathon through new classics, is the sudden realization that there are shows from other countries and you can totally watch those, too. Fans of The Office can see the overseas inspiration, Elementary fans can see how its done in Sherlock—you get the idea.

Then there’s Danger 5, which is almost nothing like anything you’ve seen before. The Australian spy comedy show is incredibly and proudly weird, like a Monty Python sketch that just keeps going. Want to see super spies fight Nazi dinosaurs? You got it. A re-imagining of Hitler? Sure, why not. It’s South Park meets Archer meets some pretty strong hallucinogens, and it’s so off-the-wall insane that you really can’t not watch it.

Dwight Howard: In the Moment

Netflix

Dwight Howard is one of the most polarizing personalities in the NBA. He’s a superstar, arguably one of the best players in the game but he’s fought with coaches and teammates, irritated the press, and just generally been a problem for every organization he’s been a part of. Now in Houston, he’s settled into a role on a contender and in Dwight Howard: In the Moment, he’s comfortable enough to dish about his life, past experiences and feuds, and more.

The Two Faces of January

Netflix

Like some thrills in your romance? The Two Faces of January tosses Hitchcock-like twists into the mix of this romantic flick that follows a con man, his wife, and a scam artist through the city of Athens in the 1960s. Based on a novel by Patricia Highsmith (also the author of The Talented Mister Ripley and Strangers on a Plane among others), the tale of intrigue is brought to life with gorgeous visuals thanks to on sight shooting in Athens and Istanbul.

Steel Magnolias

Netflix and Amazon Prime

An 80s classic, Steel Magnolias pops up on streaming services this week to show how it’s been able to stand the test of time. The comedy-drama is filled with all-star cast that includes Dolly Parton, Shirley McLaine, Sally Field, Julia Roberts, and many others. It’s a showcase of strong women in tough situations handling challenging moments in life as best they can with the support of those around them. Packed with moments of heartbreak and humor and laced with the slightly cheesy vibes of the 1980s, it’s a classic worth watching (or re-watching).

Bosch

Amazon Prime

Amazon’s new batch of original TV shows is coming and Bosch is the headliner. Based on a series of novels by Michael Connelly, the show will follow detective Harry Bosch (played by Titus Welliver) as he faces charges from a federal court that he killed a murder suspect. Bosch relentlessly pursues cases, including the killer of a 13-year old child, as he goes to sometimes questionable lengths to ensure justice. With a couple alums from The Wire on the cast, the show has a solid foundation for a long run on Amazon’s streaming service.
